Actually it looks as though it returned at some point after FF1.05, but I just found out that today it was updated for FF2.0.

Oh happy day. I thought this awesome search tool had been abandoned. Man, have I missed it. Thank you Great Pumpkin!

I tried it some time ago, and as I remember I didn't like it, and I think the reason was that it was keyboard dependent. Does memory serve?

You're right. I like using the keyboard exclusively, though. Yubnub allows you to create custom "command-line"-style searches in the same way, it sounds like, as Needle Search.
