Sixth Street in downtown San Francisco was closed for about two hours Wednesday while police removed a military explosive device from a man's apartment, according to officials.</DIV><BR /><DIV>San Francisco police Sgt. Steve Mannina said that after a man was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, the resident's friend alerted police around 12:35 p.m. that a mortar, a firing weapon used in combat, was stashed in the resident's apartment on Sixth Street in the city's South of Market neighborhood.</DIV><BR /><DIV>Police then closed Sixth Street between Mission and Market streets to remove the device, according to Mannina.</DIV><BR />Mannina speculated that the mortar had been stored in the man's apartment for years, and that his friend saw an opportunity with the man in the hospital to alert police of the mortar's existence.
