    In the Finder's "Go" menu select "Go to Folder...", enter <SPAN><SPAN>/Volumes</SPAN></SPAN> and click "Go". A Finder window will open showing the contents of the /Volumes folder. <SPAN><SPAN>DO NOT TOUCH any item that is an alias</SPAN></SPAN>. Any item that is NOT an alias is a suspect for possible removal. You will see a folder for each volume (hard disk, partition, firewire drive, etc.) attached to your computer. Each of these should have a <SPAN>special icon</SPAN>, such as the firewire icon, a white "removable media" icon (e.g. disk image), a hard drive icon, or a file server icon, etc. If one of those items has <SPAN>a plain folder icon</SPAN> it does not belong in the 'Volumes' folder and it is needlessly consuming space on your boot volume. Look in particular for an item with the name of a <SPAN>disconnected</SPAN> target, frequently with an appended " 1". Do NOT delete any item yet...
