Scandinavian movies often end with the word "SLUT" in big letters across the screen. I thought this was odd and slightly rude (*LOL*) until I found out it meant "The End". I've never met a slut I didn't like. The downtown, waterfront SLUT? Well, as long as the SLUT operates safely and arrives on time...(that was no accident, it was marketing genius). As a native Seattlite, I feel duty bound to remind everyone that before Microsoft and Starbucks and the invasion of the yuppie-snatchers, it was Seattle that created both the term "Skid Row" and the guy who married Courtney Love. If any city knows how to ride the SLUT, it would be Seattle. LOL! Also pop for the comments. ouyangwulong, you're not going back far enough. Before Courtney there was a guy named Jimi, who contributed a lot more to music than anyone after him. And Seattle educated Bruce Lee, don't forget that either. So, it's not just Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon, Real Networks etc. etc. etc. I'm certainly proud of my city and its history, even if these days we do mostly produce software that blurs the line between "legitimate program" and "virus." "Riding the S.L.U.T." fairly accurately describes what Real Networks is doing to my computer right now. Just be thankful you don't have to pay for the ridiculous Rapid Transit they're shoving down our throats. Actually, I do. Although I live in China most of the year, I still file my taxes as a resident of Mukilteo, Washington. I'm also still registered to vote, and theoretically might have to return for jury duty. Why do all of this? I would like to say out of a sense of civic duty, but mostly for cool perks like getting to ride the SLUT when I'm home. It's certainly decent of you (although not surprising for an American)... glad to know I won't be the only one paying for this lunacy. When you're back in town, drop me a line... perhaps I could buy you a cup of coffee... if I can still afford one ... if you'd like, of course... Why is it a lunacy, when automobiles, specially in major urban areas only contribute to pollution, accidents and are impractical. Cities with good mass transit systems are better cities than those jammed packed with cars. Because it's an unreal amount of money... and that's not even the worst thing... it's NOT going to get used - that's the real reason it's lunacy. Unless you can get this puppy pretty close to my place and have them run every few minutes, arriving where I'm going - I'm not taking it, especially when it costs roughly the same as paying for gas. It's as simple as that. If you eliminate all of the oldies but goodies, like the NY subway - most of the light rail projects throughout the country have been flops financially and in terms of utilization. They're talking $93k per family to get this thing done and that's just to build it, not even use it! It's impractical insanity in its purest form... Well you do have a point, good ideas can be badly executed. You need an integrated mass transit system, that allows for easy access, competitive prices and maximized benefits. We had a go with it as well, sounded like a good idea, but suffered from the same problems. Yeah, I've done free-lance work for Sound Transit, and you wouldn't believe what you have to go through to get paid! They're good people, just not very organized, and certainly not practical. On the other hand, Seattle is not a city known for its practicality. The thing that cracks me up is that we already did the expensive part of building a subway, which is digging a tunnel under a lot of sky-scrapers. But instead of just making it a subway, we run buses inside it! This is absolutely hilarious. We need mass transit. Above the ground is cheaper than under and faster than on it. However, nobody has the stones to limit the project and reign in the wild fantasies. So until then, we're kind... |
