I think the difference is that already loved his country when he was taken prisoner while defending her. He just learned how much he loved his country and why once he was a prisoner. Michelle Obama said she never loved her country until he husband was the Democratic nominee.

He was a sailor, to be precise a naval aviator flying A-4 Skyhawks of Yankee Station during Operation Rolling Thunder aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal, in fact it was his aircraft, while parked and waiting its turned to be launched from deck that was struck by a wayward Zunni (5 inch air-to-ground unguided HE rocket) rocket from a nearby F-4 Phantom II (probably a C or D) that started a massive fire that gutted the carrier. McCain was later shot down by a SA-2 Surface to Air Missile.

As for whether or not he wore the uniform, that is immaterial to the point. The point is that both statements (Michelle Obama and McCain) are not,in fact, "unpatriotic". Michelle was impressed by the support of her...

Not exactly the same (I am not making a direct comparison for Heaven's
sake), but both should be seen as pivotal moments in these people's
lives, and within that context we can see that both statements although
perhaps flawed in wording are admirable in sentiment.
This I can agree with.
