Michelle was impressed by the support of her husband supporters, the first African American to have a shot at the Presidency. McCain came to understand his commitment to his country when he faced incarceration in the hated Hanoi Hilton.

Not exactly the same (I am not making a direct comparison for Heaven's sake), but both should be seen as pivotal moments in these people's lives, and within that context we can see that both statements although perhaps flawed in wording are admirable in sentiment.
