Not only are religious conservative leading proponents of the death penalty, but they are almost always gung-ho for war--especially any war launched by a Republican president. Why such enthusiasm for so violet an undertaking? One big reason is President Bush sold the war on Iraq as a religious war. And this is what always seems to happen to those who have been given a temporary lease on power in the Church and then act as if they own it.
