Mohir says: A recent study may have found what kind of process goes awry in schizophrenic brains. Researchers found that DISC1 regulates the migration of new neurons in the adult brain. When the levels of DISC1 were reduced in mice during adult neurogenesis, the newborn neurons sped up and overshot their intended targets within the hippocampus, When the neurons finally reached their destinations, they forged an unusual number of connections with neighboring cells, a series of events that might give rise to the abnormal—and quite crippling—brain functions associated with schizophrenia, according to Hongjun Song, a Johns Hopkins neurologist who also worked on the study. It is possible, Song says, that further research will lead to a drug that treats schizophrenia by restoring normal neurogenesis. So what evolutionary advantage could schizophrenia-related genes bring to people who have some of the genes but not the disease? For now, this remains one of the many open questions. Always worth keeping an eye on neurochemical/genetic research into schizophrenia, yet important not to forget other research which looks at social and cultural environments, plus a host of other variables. 'Cause' of any mental illness is 'overdteermined', that is a product of many 'causes' rather than one. Plus, of course, do no forget the ongoing debate about whether the diagnosis of 'schizophrenia' is sound in the first place (based on 19th century classification); it's a 'concition' that has different diafnostic criteria in different cultures, and even within one culture, big differences of diagnosis between psychiatrists. This is so amazing! I just got in the door from hearing a top consultant doctor here and 2 researchers give a talk on this very topic--specifically the DISC 1.... Very exciting things are on the horizon it seems..... We claim that the reality we see is perfectly sound, but when seem in a social, political, demographic, etc, etc, context, the real value of so called reality, is clearly not viable in the long term. I was diagnose with schizophrenia, after a long episode of self imposed sleep deprivation. (Burning the candle at both ends with round the clock, rotating shifts, and a stage production) There were similar symptoms and I was placed on antipsychotic medicines, but one of the symptoms of sleep deprivation is the phenomena called 'dreaming while awake.' While in that state before the medication took effect, I decided that what was said to be 'reality' was subject to qualifications, and reasoning that w... Bio-Psycho-Social. Isn't any model that doesn't look at it ALL, incomplete? I just got in the door from hearing a top consultant doctor here and 2 researchers give a talk on this very topicThat IS cool! I love the synchronicities. Life's mysteries. pokkets, if clipmarks was reduced to only your comments i would still visit every day. pokkets - how many days you have to stay without sleep before "seeing" things ? - i am interested |
