Perhaps it is because information was supressed from the American public for 8 long years.

It's not easy to make an informed decision when ones' own government is consistently feeding them misinformation, and supressing scientific findings.

While government suppression of scientific findings during the Bush administration is widely known, the fact still remains that Americans, particularly on the Right, are skeptical of science in general. The Bushys used this to further their cronyism with big business and the suppression and outright lying concerning scientific issues. After all, that's where the money was.

In addition, they used the religious right's ignorance of science issues to promote this distrust of scientific findings and promote a general anti-intellectualism which allowed them to use trigger issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the "war on Christianity" to inflame and align their base.
