I generally disagree with this guy, but he makes an interesting case: a student who writes a research paper today is really demonstrating his ability to find and synthesize information, not to think on his or her own.

It would help if the questions asked were fresh so that students would be required to think and synthesize information in order to write their own research papers. I believe that too often teachers/professors get lazy and ask the same questions every time, thereby failing to stimulate original research.

@gingembre: on the one hand, yah, you're right. On the other hand, do you know how hard it is to come up with original, well-crafted assignments every single time? Building a well-designed writing assignment is like writing a short story. It's really hard to turn them out repeatedly and consistently.

For 14 years I taught freshman science courses and worked closely with other professors and students, so I have a fairly good idea of the types of assignments given to students at the university where I was employed. I incorporated 3 short research papers into each of my courses and took great pains to make each assignment different so that students had to rely on their own efforts rather than plagiarize the work of others. Each paper turned in was both a challenge and...

On the one hand, I don't generally agree with this guy. On the other hand, cut-and-paste is a widely used and accepted tool in the business world. However, I think the research paper is necessary because it's designed to teach students research skills that they're going to need in the business world. And students who want to go on to academia as a career are going to need to know how to do research.
