Theists who sell hate for a living like to use the term to refer to people who write books challenging religious beliefs and who file court briefs, as if these are somehow comparable to bombs and guns. They love to use the word 'militant' because it feeds fear to the listener. These people understand how politically useful fear can be.
But theirs is a rhetoric of hate - a quest for power through deception and manipulation.
The proof is found in the absurdity in saying that people who write books against violence and who file court briefs are 'militant'. Anybody who says such a thing must love promoting fear over truth.
In spite of this rhetorical fear-mongering, it violates no principle of logic or nature for an actual militant atheist to exist.
All it takes is one person learning the wrong lessons as he reads and hears what others say, a particular set of ideas that striking a particular mind in the wrong way, and we get a story like the one that started this blog entry[/qu

Actually during the abortion bomb clinics we saw examples of "militant fundamentalist Christianity". Any Christian group of people that would support military force to enforce it's country's will abroad is militant. Michael Ledeen of the American Enterprise Institute, declared "we are a warlike people and we love war." The idea that the war in Iraq is just a pilot project for a series of splendid little wars seemed, at first an alarmist fantasy, but many people close to this administration have made it clear they regard this war as only a beginning, with until recently, overwhelming Christian support. Killing in the name of Jesus is nothing new and as old as the Crusades. I just had a d...

Why are atheists so anti-religion?

I mean, I don't believe in the tooth fairy but I don't make a blog dedicated to showing the TF is a farce.

I think it is similar to the anti smokers. The worse ones are the smokers who recently quite smoking as opposed to people to never smoke. They just say "Smoking is stupid". The post smoker turned anti smoking evangelist goes on a rampage every time they see someone light up.

So great, you don't believe in a supreme being. No need to stomp on everyone that does. Get a hobby.

For one reason, UpStateMike, I've not heard of any of the Tooth Fairy Deniers boarding planes and flying them into skyscrapers. I don't think anti smokers are responsible for the carnage in Darfur. The civil war in Iraq is over religious differences.

Sorry if you feel "stomped on". Why does this bother you so? Are people not allowed to criticize views held by other people? Maybe we should bring back blaspheme laws? Yes these are important issues that need to be discussed. They won't go away simple by haveing people engage in hobbies.

Amen to that!!! LMAO
No, seriously... I dare anyone to disagree with the fact that more blood has been shed, atrocities committed and people enslaved and repressed by organized religion than by anything else. Religion is the root of all evil.

Of course theists shot right back (I always envision them doing so with a pouty look and their hands on their hips) what about Mao, Stalin, or (drum roll) Hitler. Some how, they equate the fact that these people were atheists (factually that's not true for Hitler) so whatever action they took was in the name of atheism. My favorite counter for this was that a person killed by a tall man wasn't killed in the name of tallness (see here). Theists then pause a beat and continue on as though I hadn't said a word. Strange.

I decided to be more vocal against religion after our evangelist-in-chief vetoed funding for stem cell research. Now they want to teach Creationism in science class in my kid's schools. And the latest is that global warming is no big deal, because Jesus will be come back any day now. During this last election my state passed an amendment telling us who can and can't love.
If they tooth fairy believers were doing all of the above, I'd be vocal against them too.

And I think I started to be more vocal about the hypocrisy of my Catholic religion, Laceym, when several Catholic bishops carried out the Vatican's orders by refusing to offer communion to John Kerry--because of his support of abortion rights--and by telling church members they would commit a "grievous sin" if they voted for Kerry. (It was, however no sin to vote for candidates who supported the death penalty, preemptive war, and nuclear weapons. According to the very limited gospel of Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson and a handful of Catholic bishops, unless you believe that God put George W. Bush in the White House--where he gets his advice straight from the Almighty himself--an...

The biggest problem with religion is the so-called separation of church and state which is an oxymoron (especially these days) and of course the whole "my God's better than your god" mentality. As long as any institution tries to force its belief, morals, rules - whatever; on any individual, government, class or group, we will have dissent. Atheists are just one small voice speaking out against religious control.

Sort of . Actually, this is a big problem for religion. They'd love nothing better than to have the full power of the government behind them to force their views on everyone else. Seeing how government is the only institution authorized to use force (deadly if needed) upon it's citizenry, giving religion this power would be devastating (as you correctly implied).

"my God's better than your god"
Unfortunately, this is built in to all religions (with only a few exceptions). Here's hoping that the many "one small voice speaking out" will make a difference. It's happened before. See ya...
