I attended a Veterans' Day banquet last night. A fundamentalist group sang patriotic songs, including one called "In God We Still Trust." My 17 year old commented later "Did you hear that? Did you hear what it said?"

The song included the line there is no "separation."

My son said, in astonishment, "That is scary."

I just finished reading "Founding Faith" by Steven Waldman, a history of the origins of freedom of religion and the first amendment. Of the first four presidents, John Adams would be most likely to agree with the song. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, principal authors of, respectively, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution itself, would have been appalled. None of them would understand the song because, among other things, they would be of the opinion that the national motto was "E pluribus unum" (as enacted by the Congress of the Confederation in 1782).
