Perhaps there is not much motivation to care about others without the existence of "some deity."

At any rate, Christians are to refrain from hurting others for both reasons.

Oh, really! I would think that true morality would embody empathy apart from being coerced into correct behavior by threats of eternal punishment. As far as not much motivation to care about others, how about survival of your social group for one example.
At any rate, Christians are to refrain from hurting others for both reasons.
Well, that evidently doesn't seem to be working out too well, does it.

I lost the formatting from my above comment. Here is the revised comment in the interests of readiblity.

Excellent response. And for the longest time I knew that but wanted to think that people were normally ethical. That doesn't hold true for most of the religious people I come into contact with. They are so full of hate, even for each other (other religions).

And historically, how could the Inquisition happen at all if they were morally mature? How could priests molest children while the Pope and bishops seek to hide them, if they were morally mature?

Clearly the history of violence from religious people demands that they have some sort of stop-gap that prevents them from doing it.

The problem is with the ones in authority! They do everything possible to "get saved" from their sins becaus...

Ironically, passion for the good of others is the long-neglected core of Christianity. It's the essence, not of the religion by that name, but of Jesus Christ, who preached "love your neighbor as yourself." And that not for the fear of judgment, but for the joy of loving!
I'm not sure Jesus ever intended to found a religion; in fact, his conflicts were almost exclusively with the ultra-religious. Religions, once they become institutions, tend to care first for their own survival and run over people who don't play the game.
I think you have more in common with Jesus than do many millions of born-again-ers with a less loving agenda.
