In einem Beitrag für die "Leipziger Volkszeitung" unterstützt der Bischof den Vorschlag der hessischen Kultusministerin Karin Wolff, die christliche Schöpfungslehre in den Biologieunterricht mit aufzunehmen. Die bisherige Schulpraxis verenge sich zu sehr auf Darwins Evolutionstheorie, kritisierte Mixa; dies habe "etwas Totalitäres und ist auch und gerade aus Sicht der Wissenschaft unvernünftig". Das Anliegen der Ministerin werde der Notwendigkeit gerecht, "eine Dimension des Denkens und der Vernunft wieder zurückzugewinnen, die wir in den letzten Jahrzehnten verloren haben".
