        Eiffel Tower, the most famous city landmark in Paris, was designed 
       by Gustave Eiffel and erected (1887-9) in the Champs-de-Mars for the 
       Paris Exhibition of 1889. The tower consists of an open-lattice 
       framework supporting three tiered platforms. It is 300 m (984 ft.) 
       high. It was the tallest structure in the world until 1930 when the 
       Empire State Building was completed. It is of interest that Gustave
