There are no 24 hour ATMs in Japan (closed on holidays and many only open during normal bank hours).

Could this be for religious reasons?

The Japanese culture is ancient and rich. I love these trivia tidbits. It helps make a foriegn culture understandable. Nice Clip

I respect the honor that drive the Japanese traditions. It gives me the same feelings as the American Indian culture does. A 'Oneness' with the natural world.
