masbury says: Will WalMart ever stop leeching American workers? I haven't walked into a Wal-Mart for years as a customer. The last time I was in a Wal-Mart was during Chicago's Big Box Living Wage Ordinance battle, quietly interviewing workers about wages, benefits, and conditions. Come on. Stop bashing Walmart. They are the largest employer in the world. Why is that? Do all those poor people HAVE to work there. OF course not. They work there because it is better than the alternatives. Do either of you even know someone who works at Walmart? I do. My karaoke buddy (I know I shouldn't admit to that) is a long time employee. We talk about you Walmart bashers all the time. He is constantly amazed as are his employees as to why you would denigrate there company. And I meant poor, not in the financial sense. why you would denigrate there company.Wal-Mart discriminates against women. Less than half of Wal-Mart employees have health insurance. Wal-Mart employees average pay puts them at the poverty level. Wal-Mart employees have been locked in stores overnight and forced to work. Wal-Mart has been fined for breaking [url=http://www.highbeam.com... you mean...2 Million contractual violations? OMG SS, this clip does not refer to WalMart bashing at all; it refers to a court finding WalMart in violation of Minnesota law. Are you saying it's OK with you if corporations are not held accountable when they violate our laws? Is poor little WalMart so terribly abused that it can't be expected to make profit legally like others do? mug - yep! Astonishing, eh? Masbury, you know that is not what I am saying. And I am sure the reason you posted this clip is because you think it validates your view of corporations. BUt you see to forget that these corporation are made up of millions of people who have chosen to work at them. Walmart is a fantastic company and the efficacy of their management keeps prices low so that millions can shop there. They even send their own management teams to suppliers to help them find ways to be more efficient. By doing these things not only do they keep prices low, they are also able to increase profits and expand to hire more workers and increase the tax base for all those programs you advocate. AS for health insu... A for getting locked in, I am sure that wasn't the corporate policy. Some stupid manager made a bad choice. I had one of my managers sleeping with an employee. Trust me it wasn't corporate policy. Problem is that a) its their buying of cheap stuff from places like China that helps them keep their prices low, at least until their local competition goes under, then the prices creep up b) more and more people get stuck at Walmart because their nobody else hiring them, in part because Walmart drove all other retailers away. My father was a Wal-Mart employee for years (1991-1999). He was full-time and the reason he worked there was that he had schizophrenia. He couldn't get a corporate job and took what would come. His lack of health care is detailed here . He died at age 60 last January, btw. Thank you for sharing this grievous but important example, dm. I'm reminded of the book "Nickel and Dimed: on not gettng by in America" by Barbara Ehrenreich. WalMart is one of the employers she goes to work for, to see if a person really can survive on the kind of job that a minimum wage-earner could get. I wish every American would read the book. It's eye-opening. Many, many people simply can't work for higher pay somewhere else, as you point out. Health issues, sometimes below-average intelligence - a dozen different reasons - family providers are stuck working for WM without enough money or benefits, and WM makes profits by chintzing on their benefits. Masbury, you know that is not what I am saying. Is this meant to read ..."Masbury, you know that is not what I [intended to say]"? The whole point of the printed word is that it gives you the opportunity to type what you intend and not have us second guess what you intended to type, Sillysam. It helps if you engage your intellect before your fingers and keep away from your usual mantras. Maybe my disability of being dyslexic is an advantage here. That combined with being too old to be better that a two finger typist gives me a value on the written word that you obviously do not have. I mention this here as you don't show any ability to learn to do better. Maybe a j... Thank you, dmegivern. |
