All I had to do with XP Home was right-click on the Recycle Bin, hit Properties, and under the Global tab select "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted."

Does seem easier...

you can also just hold shift whenever deleting a file/folder. this will also bypass the recycle bin.

this is excellent. i was having trouble with my desktop (it doesn't recognise my keyboard for some reason)....and i just discovered that win xp has an integrated "on-screen keyboard". SCORE!!! (In case anyone else needs it: start-->run, then type osk). I think that's just made my day. (sad, i know).
