I'm sure the Police were too busy laughing, and thought he also had enough of a handicap. I can just imagine the guy pleading earnestly for police help, hanging up, and then suddenly realizing what he had done. The police may have decided, that what he knew about the dealers that took from him, wasn't enough for them to solve the crime, but enough to make the dealers see him as a threat. They didn't want to turn a petty crime into a murder investigation.
