Interesting article, those do appear to be mistakes today, although who is to say that other serious problems would not have come about from keeping the army and current civil government in place.

However, if you are going to put stock in that, you need to put stock in this:

The plan was great on the drawing board but when the U.S.went into Iraq all plans fell at the first hurdle, because they discovered quickly that they had absolutely no idea what to expect. Rules of engagement were worthless because the style of warfare was alien to U.S.Troops. The single significant element of warfare that was deployed was the element of surprise. Surprise can do terrible things to best laid plans.
