The theory is interesting but surely the total obedience to the laws of church and state in the medieval period demanded by those authorities and the penalties for disobedience so severe that it would be a brave man indeed to question them let alone rebel.

The translation of any great body of work into the vernacular has always been fraught with danger for the powers-that-be and they resist vigourously the pressure for change until enlightenment vanquishes the darkness when resistance to progress is pointless and self-destroying.
