I've always taken the position that nature is neither cruel nor kind; merely indifferent.

Shit happens. There is no intelligence behind it. Best to learn, adapt, prepare, and recover.

have you ever thought that humanity exists only to supply food for various parasites?

I believe in God, only I spell it Nature.

"You do not beg the sun for mercy." - so said someone, Liet Kynes I think, in the Dune Chronicles. And yeah, that's pretty much how I view it.

That we are little more than "hosts" for parasites and other aliens is too much for most humans to fathom.

After all, we were made in the image of an invisible being, right?

The human body is host to many symbiotic relationships, such as the bacteria in our digestive tracts, or the mitochondria in our cells. We have used biological evolution to trace back to when humans first were able to metabolize milk.

Mother nature may not be friendly to individuals, but it seeks to work together and form chains and structures of balance for the survival of the whole. What a shock for some to realize that we as individuals are worth far less than the value of we as a whole in the scheme of life.

Of course Mother Nature is our friend, without it none of us would be here now.

Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries
by Neil deGrasse Tyson

His pieces are organized under whimsical banners such as "All the ways the cosmos wants to kill us,"

On further reflection, I have to say that my comments of Nature favoring life as a whole over individual life is incorrect as well. Nature is nature and cares not. Life or no life, it will continue. It is only a reaction of forces generated by the elements of this planet. It is just as likely to continue on a life filled world or an airless volcanic world.

Life itself works in patterns as a whole through survival and adaptation in order to continue. Nature continues and blithely wipes out species or provides boons depending on fortune or bad luck of location. Survival is the only driving factor that allows life to overcome nature.

Nature is not our friend. It is something that must be overcome, and perhaps one day harnessed.

Rubbish. There is pretty much nothing we are going to do to this planet that is really going to hurt it. The worse we can do is hurt ourselves. Nature doesn't work on our clock. You can nuke this planet until nothing but bacteria survive and the seasons will continue, the continents will move, and in time life will simply expand and fill the empty niches.

It may be a far different world than what we have now, but it will still be here long after our bones crumble.
