pokkets says: 13,000 people once lived in Pompeii, which is now being visited by around 2.5 million tourists each year, while the 1/3 that remains uncovered has become a Naples garbage dump. Maybe the Mafia could do something good for Italy for a change. When I read about the 2.5 million tourists, I couldn't help thinking about the pile if garbage at the base of Mt Everest. I wonder how many tourists take their garbage with them. Tourists complain about the state of Pompeii, when they are clearly prime contributors to the degradation. Like finding an unspoiled wilderness, inviting tourists to come and see it..and spoil it. (The West coast of Australia also comes to mind.) Perhaps the Mafia could invite the tourists to Sicily. They have a history of making remarkable offers. |
