I have to disagree with the placing of Dobermans on that list....lol........they're not so big with the brains and can actually take up to 2 times as long to train (take it from someone who knows!).

The list is lacking Pit Bulls who have been proven to be smarter than many of these dogs. I've had Shepherds and they are no wiz kids!

I agree with both of the prior comments. I have never known a doberman to be "smart" though i don't really have any experience to base that on. Also, I know that sheperds are the best at certain things, but I don't think that makes them smart. I have a sheperd and have known several others and I swear they are the least smart dog I have ever seen. As far as the poodles are concerned, I really wish these lists would clarify that it is the Standard Poodle that is smart. I have known many toy poodles and have never heard of one being smarter than the air they constantly bark at.

I'll agree with the #1 choice, but the smartest dog I've ever seen is the Golden Retriever; plus their disposition can not be beat. (A poodle is smart!!??)

I agree that the Standard poodle is the one that should be mentioned.

Although I have owned a doberman that could spell I wouldn't categorize them as THE among smartest nor would I put Labs in the list. (I am currently the owner of one who is up for sale or give away. He won't stop running away. I'm so afraid the neighbors will shoot him. Registered or not.)
The smartest dog was a Kangal cross. She was one fast learner. Beautiful, protective and big.

I agree with the border collie on intelligence, but trainability is what they lack. As for the dobes and the comment about them taking twice as long to train. well, from my ownership of sheperds and dobes for the past 20 years, I have come to the conclusion, as many others in dogdom, that the doberman is remarkably smart and eager to please their owner. which makes them very easy to train and quick learners. there comes a catch, it probably takes you longer to train your dobe, for your dobe doesn't accept you as a true pack leader, maybe a companion, but not a leader. for if they did, that dog will obey every command, first time. as stated earlier my current dobe also can spell, has over 2...

thx for the good insight slimjim. I am wondering about your comment on trainability of the border collies though.. I was under the impression from dog shows and such that they were the best dog overall. It's quite rare you see a dog in one of those dog challenges that is not a border collie.

I just have to point out here that just as there is great variability among humans intelligence, clearly there is such among other species too, dogs included. While some of you may have had genius dogs and/or idiot dogs, I'm sure the list is directed at the average of the species.

This all depends heavily on how hard the owner of the dog works with them. My mother worked constantly with our border collie who is now the smartest dog I've ever seen, whereas she didn't do much with our pomeranian and that dog is fairly...dumb.

i dissagree on the 1st mos intellegent dogs because the german sheperd should be first becuase back in the days in the wars. the german shepherd was the one who the people used which makes them very intellegent.
