ML is protected by bullet-proof glass almost two centimeters thick. Doctors were trying to assess whether she was suffering from Stendhal Syndrome, a rare condition that causes dizziness, confusion or violent acts when an individual is exposed to art.

This is reminiscent of the 1972 mutilation of one of the supreme masterpieces in the history of Western art, Michelangelo's "Pieta," by Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian-born Australian, who leaped over a guard rail in St Peter's crying, "I'm Jesus Christ!" and attacked the statue with a hammer. He, too, was diagnosed as insane, possibly suffering from Peter, Paul, and Mary Syndrome:

I had no idea about Stendhal Syndrome. It sounded fake, so I looked it up. I love learning new stuff.

She should have been arrested. Someone could have been burned by her stupidity, not to mention the mess that she created.

How often do you get to see someone lose the plot in quite an exquisite way as this? No damage done to the painting or people around. I can't believe they have a label for it? But then society loves labels doesn't it???

Everything has to have a box that it can be categorized into nanu nanu signing out, scotty beam me up now!!!

deb, I was at the Louvre once - oh it was miserable for me - I'm just not into that kind of stuff I guess....but the thought of it....kind of made me laugh....the place is so stuffy with snobbery.....

But I agree with you, I would not be happy if someone was throwing shit at people.....that's where I draw the line....!

I couldn't get a good look at Mona when I was at the Louvre (yeah, it is a pretty snobby place but then so are a lot of Parisians - just my experience); it seemed to be permanently mobbed by Japanese tourists. Sounds like a lapse in security - pretty sure you are not allowed to wander about with food or drink.

The woman put up no resistance when museum guards apprehended her after the incident on August 2.

She was handed over to police who said the woman "did not have all her mental faculties and has been transferred to the police psychiatric infirmary."

The Louvre, the biggest art museum in the world, has thousands of paintings, but most of the millions of visitors a year make a bee-line for the Mona Lisa, known in France as La Joconde.

The 500-year-old painting was stolen in 1911 from the Louvre but was returned two years later after an Italian was arrested for i...
