I think Borg would vehemently disagree with the fact that Jesus didn't exist. He has made his life's work a historical study to him and I agree with him that Jesus was indeed a human being who walked the face of the Earth. Faith is one thing, fact is another, Debbyski. There has been no evidence to show that Jesus (or any other Biblical prophet) was a historical person yet. Even a tiny clue. There had been neither Abram/Abraham nor Jacob, Joseph, Moses and Jesus. But billions of people keep believing all those mythical stories and personalities that the sacred books of the monotheistic religions tell. I respect their faith but yet can't help seeing it as a tragical situation for the human reason - especially in the 21st century. Well said Invictus. Popped for the comment as well as the clip Those that cling to "faith" as honorable are the problem... While I agree that people have the right to believe whatever they like (about the nature of the universe) - we have developed a FAR more reliable method of uncovering truth: its called the scientific method and it is founded on demonstrability and reason. Those that cling to irrational beliefs are the first to be swayed by the arguments of the tyrannical... And, as Jefferson said, tyrants have always found willing accomplices in the clergy. And you have a different kind of faith Invictus. If you want to argue that historical scholars of Jesus do not leave room for doubt then you would be correct. But mythical is a stretch too. can't help seeing it as a tragical situation for the human reason - especially in the 21st century. That particular "lens" is not mine Invictus. You know that don't you? Forget the "lens", Deb. You're one of my best friends at Clipmarks and that's thousands times more important and valuable than thousands-year-old myths. Earnric - You are right to praise the scientific method, but most of the decisions we make every day don't employ it, nor could they. It is useful for facts that are repeatable and testable in a lab under controlled conditions. But the scientific method can't prove you were born - it can't be tested. It can't prove where you were yesterday, or even that yesterday happened. Almost every act you complete today won't be rooted in scientific method, but in simple assumption. So it isn't quite correct to suggest that we now make our decisions and get our proofs by scientific method, and that subjective choices are radically outmoded. We don't have observable, empirical, and measurable results ... Forget the "lens", Deb. You're one of my best friends at Clipmarks andAnd so are you mine, Invictus, so are you mine |
