So far no word on who he was or why this happened. The death toll is up to 22 and the reporter on MSNBC just said "It's like a sporting event... It's remarkable. It's an amazing time to be a reporter."

TV just got turned off. God I hate the news.

After I looked for the article I was amazed that there was only one clip. I was getting ready to clip it when I say yours. I was going to title mine
'Gunman Kills More Students'
This clipcomment is being updated as I type.

What I do not understand is how does two hands, two guns and one human being could kill so many people?

One explanation: sophisticated and easily available guns.

You add your own explanation.

How many lives could have been saved were Americans not so paranoid about law-abiding citizens carrying? The gunman could have been taken out after the first shot was fired.

What I want to know is, how could one gunman with two handguns (which had to be reloaded) take out so many people without being stopped?

ABC News reports that local police state two 9mm semi-automatic pistols may have been used, and the gunman was possibly wearing a bulletproof vest.

you have a good point wiccan, where was the security which should have been beefed up knowing Columbine all too well. We will find answers to all these sooner or later. Political bickering aside, there is nothing wrong in contemplating the cause and reasons of any tragedy as long as we remain civil in our conversation....just a side note on where I see n2 wants to take this debate.

I am sick of rampant gun crime in the USA. There are far too many guns period. A gun has become a friggin' fashion accessory. I went into a shopping mall in North Carolina and was shocked to see a sign that had the icons for no dogs, no guns. NO GUNS???!!!

Why the hell would you need a gun to go to the mall? How have Americans come to see the need to carry firearms in your daily life as normal?

Guns are for killing people. When I was a kid, the only people who "needed" guns were policemen and farmers.

This is disgusting deplorable, and i don't care if all of the Bush loving, NRA Conservatives get a flea up their bottoms and reply with fear-mongering reasons why we need the freedom to kill...
4-16-2007 4:15 PM
wiccantexan
This is hardly an example of "rampant gun violence." It was a single gunman with an obvious personal agenda. Yes, guns are for killing people. Law-abiding citizens carrying guns can kill the predator before 31 people die.

There is no "normal life." There's just life. And a civilized society protects the next generation.

The massacre took place at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus,
beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a coed dormitory
that houses 895 people, and continuing at least two hours later at
Norris Hall, an engineering building about a half-mile away,
authorities said.
Police said they were still investigating the shooting at the dorm when they got word of gunfire at the classroom building.

Severe mental illness can not be ruled out as the reason for the shootings. I don't think it's a reflection on current society values any more than the Texas tower shootings were in 1966.
http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/mass/whitman/index_1.html

I would hope that campus security is beefed up big time after this horrific, tragic, and unnecessary loss of life. I also hope that there is more money spent on student services, especially mental health. I also feel the utmost empathy for the parents and family of the victims. There is nothing worse than a loss of a child for a parent.

Well, the latest is that the officials will not limit it to one shooter and that no one knows *yet* if this situation is not associated to the bomb threats. AND no one is saying the #2 shooter, who is dead, is the same as the #1 shooter. Very interesting.... Lots of speculation and no FACTS yet. Nothing is confirmed.

A very sad day but I wonder why we are always shocked when these terrible things happen to *us*. We never know what the day holds for any of us and today is a stark reminder that life is so uncertain.

So I'm assuming it is legal to buy guns in Virginia? ABC News seems all over it and I don't blame them, the murderer had a receipt in his backpack. I guess 23 is a sane age to buy guns.
4-17-2007 10:26 AM
wiccantexan
Apparently, there was a gun show recently in the area where over 400 guns were sold. And 23 can be a perfectly sane age to buy guns, when the individual is not treated as a child until they're 30. My own 24-yr-old college daughter is looking at firearm training.

In case of " shooting " (shooting taking place in a school, a post office, a company or directly in the premises of CNN as recently), European media have generally a title every fact:
"This shooting boosts the debate on firearms in the United States."
Believe nothing !
It has been hours since TVs cover the shooting of Virginia Tech. It was question nowhere of the problem of the control of firearms.

A teacher tried to get him help. She tried to get him to get mental help. She reported him to police, but he hadn't done anything wrong at the time. Two girls reported that he had harassed them. We've all been harassed by creeps. From what I've been reading and hearing, there really wasn't anything anyone could do. There are many more like him out there ready to explode.

God help us.

My mother is a social worker, and she says the biggest obstacle in such cases is that, until the person actually physically harms someone, the law binds anyone who might actually commit such individuals involuntarily.

Yet you can lock away a family member in an institution for observation.
Imagine what would happen if a coworker, boss or teacher could have you locked away for observation because you have a 'bent' personality.
Noone would be safe.
4-19-2007 10:17 AM
wiccantexan
Observation for 72 hours. Even a mental case is very able to hold it together for that long. However, if they are not deemed a viable threat, they are cut loose. Also, you cannot lock away a family member just by asking. There must be written documentation of problems, etc. The system is simply too swamped to do otherwise.
