I wish W. had the balls to fire back at his political enemies more often. Carter is not only irrelevant, he is the worst President of the 20th century. Remember sitting in gas lines and only being able to buy gas on even or odd days? You think the price of gas is high now, adjust the price of gas during the Carter administration for inflation and you'll see it was higher then.

People want to blame Carter for high gas prices when it was the OPEC countries finally getting together and realizing the power they had.

At least Carter did something which was to create the Department of Energy and start a program to develop alternative fuels. You can credit Ronald Reagan for destroying that program.

I wonder what current events would be like if we weren't dependent on Middle East oil and all the national security issues that go along with it.

Carter is probably more listened to internationally than W is.

Carter will always be associated with the "misery index".

I miss the years when ex-presidents left office and lived quiet lives. I think offering advice and expertise (when asked) is very helpful to other administrations, but when past Presidents keep dabbling in current affairs, when they no longer have access to intell or those who do, well....that tends to remind us of their own failures, bad decisions and the repercussions of them.

We'd be much less dependent on foreign oil if we opened up 0.1% of ANWR for oil drilling, but the environmental wackos won't let us do that. We could also get more oil and natural gas from offshore rigs, but again environmental wackos stand in the way of energy independence.

Problem is, Carter is not the President anymore. He had his chance and he created the problems we have in Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Remember the Iran hostage crisis? The Iranians refused to let the hostages go until Carter was out of office. They released them shortly after Reagan came into office.

Sure I remember the Iran Hostage Crisis. If you study history you know that Reagans administration negotiated with them to be held until after the election between Carter and Reagan. They promised Iran a better deal than they would get if they released them during Carter's administration.

They were just talking about this on Meet The Press this Sunday. Reagan acknowledged that this was done in personal papers recently released. Acknowledged that Iran paid for weapons shipments, and that the money went to Oliver North to give to the Contras in violation of the Boland Amendment. One of the more despicable moments in US history.

The US should be extremely grateful that they had such a compet...

Refining capacity hasn't been increased because guess what? NIMBY's and environmental wackos have blocked the construction of new refineries. How about plutonium as an alternative fuel source? Not in cars, but electric plants. We haven't built any new nuclear power plants since I was in elementary school.

Useless program. Thank you President Reagan. Jimmy Carter while a very decent man, was a horrendous President.

Refining capacity could definitely be increased. The Oklahoma community of Cushing would let them build a refinery in a heart beat. In fact there use to be an oil refinery there. Big Oil isn't going to build anymore refineries because we are reaching peak oil and why would they want to sell gasoline more cheaply?

Not for nuclear. When we push for more nuclear it legitimizes everybody else's claim for nuclear. Biodiesel from the jatropha plant would be better. It grows in arid regions of the world providing much needed labor to under developed third world countries. 91% of the oil is extracted from a cold pressing and minimal proces...
