Although the story about the woman with the brain tumor is upsetting, i can see how it becomes 'obesity' a new magic word for all the evil in the world yet i don't like much this fat pride movement, this kind of reasoning can lead to very interesting pride movements, instead of dealing with a problem lets glorify it. this kind of reasoning can lead to very interesting pride movements, instead of dealing with a problem lets glorify it.Agreed. One such example that jumps up in my head is the Pro-ana so called movement. I'm not one for masking problems with glory, but admittedly not all "overweight" cases are indeed problematic (health wise or otherwise). I like the idea of bursting the bubble on some largely accepted, sometimes mistaken perceptions, and I like this Fat Pride potential for counterbalancing the skinny trends. I never did go much for these kinds of movements, they are usually just a front, mainly used by those who cannot accept themselves as they are to counter any criticism or ridicule that they may get as a result of being as they are, and in the end serves no useful purpose and is indeed many times counter productive. Those that are happy and content with their bodies have NO use of such movements Many times if you ask a fat person if they are happy as they are they will say yes, fine, but then ask if they prefer to be fat and then you will mostly get a different response, the indication here is that these people although they may be happy as they are , are also aware that for many reasons ... I share most of your points here michaelll and at the same time I think the slim-craze trend (a pride movement in itself, even if not by name) is veiling a sensible healthy attitude to weight perceptions. I clipped this one for the awareness it ignites concerning this whole issue. "Fat" will better remain a term describing the body, to my mind, then the label it is becoming in most human societies. |
