debbyski says: Interestingly enough there has been lack of research into this field of sexuality and sexual preference. I remember reading a research report about a form of circumstantial bisexuality amongst black mineworkers in South Africa. Under white rule black mineworkers, recruited from the rural areas, and separated from their wives, were housed in all-male hostels. The study showed that although the majority of men studied were neither homosexual or bisexual in orientation, they nevertheless practiced homosexuality out of necessity. Must be similar to the prison situation. Interestingly enough they did not consider themselves to be bisexual and back home with their wives and girlfriends, maintained a heterosexual lifestyle. They had a name for this behaviour, but I've forgotten it. I think the behavioral name for what you spoke of in the study is..."horny." Same reason that otherwise heterosexual, adult male priests prey on children. A biological urge that wants release, finds the most accessable outlet. LOL. You nailed it Hawkeye! i majored in sexuality studies for about a year (have yet to finish my degree). i think the problem with bisexuality is that it's kind of hard to study, probably for several reasons. i also have a feeling that there aren't a lot of bisexuals forcing the issue, necessarily. there's plenty of research into hetero/homo-sexuality because there are plenty of people talking up about the issues surrounding them. i don't think that bisexuality has the same support. also: michellezm, "circumstantial homosexuality" was also true for sailors and cowboys. How would research help anything scientifically? What other impact would there be if there was research? The only reason I can think of for bisexuals wanting to know the results of research is to try to figure out their probabillity of having group sex. I have nothing against group sex but is quantity more important than quality when it comes to finding a sex buddy? Most people don't even care about scientific research anyway, unfortunately. Who cares how common bisexuality is though, other than bi-bashers? Then again ignorance isn't the answer for anything, in my opinion. — Comment removed by moderator — This is an interesting question, but as I see it, virtually impossible to research. Behavior is one thing, but what seems to concern all of us is identity. Even though some Christian fundamentalists insist it is strictly behavior and choice, I think they revile it above other sins because deep down they fear that it is an unchangeable identity. After all, after stealing, you simply need confess, repent, or "accept Jesus" and then not do it again. The fundamentalist horror of homosexuality seems to derive from an unspoken fear that perhaps it is unchangeable, and thus a sin ingrained in certain human natures. (This has serious implications for some theologies.) That said, where does bisexu... Very interesting points OW. I wonder if your comment that sexual attraction and orientations changing over time is only applicable in a behavior sense? I also agree with your comment that this is a "gray" area and since we are all socialized as hetrosexuals it would be almost impossible to research. This is indeed very interesting. Well, in the end, because I believe that "identity" should be respected as an intrinsic part of a person's humanity, I differ with the majority of the gay movement in that I would not rush to insist that it is an issue of "being born that way." Before anyone goes all Stonewall on me, hear out my reasoning: Our personal identity is something we construct from a complex variety of factors. Some may be inherently biological, and those certainly influence it, but they are not the only factor. We base our identity on our perceptions and our feelings, whatever their sources. If we reject the legitimacy of a person's feelings in order to mold society to our own model, we are treating them as a me... In thinking more about it, it may well be that it is not a single biological factor that determines sexual orientation, but in fact many working together in a matrix of influences. (This is a key advantage to the Klein Grid.) Thus, although our lexicon essentially gives people three or four choices to describe their sexual identity, on a biological level, we may find that in fact everyone has a different sexual identity. Although we may not be able to alter our personal biological sexual orientation, at different times we may perceive and feel different things, which leads us to draw different conclusions. What I believe in is respecting the conclusions that an individual draws about their ... An important caveat! I am not gay, even though I'm really open-minded, so all of my ideas are speculative and philosophical at their core. If anyone who identifies as gay draws different conclusions from me, or would like to offer their perspective on the issue, then I would welcome it, either here, or privately through e-mail at austininchina@hotmail.com Males. Do we encourage bisexual behaviour in females? Females. Do they enjoy watching gay men? Males. Watching gay men is a turn off? Females. Another female gay or straight. Turn on/off? I'm intrigued by the Hollywood version of sex. It doesn't line up with my inclinations. The 'money shot' may make money but IMO in doesn't make great sex. 'Coming' on some one's face is a big turnoff for me. I don't get S&M at all. I've never had a gay experience, yet. "Don't knock it until you've tried it" might explain my position or lack of same. I've never posted anything like this before. My excuse is that it is 7.26 am and I'm horny! Good morning. A series of pops for ouyangwulong comments. I love it. popped One thing about bisexuality that some people can agree on - there are both straight and gay people who are antipathetic to them because both sides feel that bi people are really gays who refuse to admit it rather than accept that they are erotically attracted to both genders. THANK you for bringing that up Jorjor! I'd like to talk about biphobia for a moment. Bisexuals are much slower to come out of the closet I think for a multitude of reasons, and I have to be honest here. There are some indiviudals in the gay community that are not really receptive to bi's. We are perceived as fence sitters, as sleeping with the enemy, as eating our cake and having it too, as not being able to make up our minds, as on our way to becoming gay and not being able to admit it, or they just plain don't get it. And I have to admit this is particularily hurtful coming from the gay community as this is a community that has been historically discriminated upon and you... Another point about bi is that there seems to be more acceptance of female than male bisexuality. The idea of two men, either as a couple or as part of a MMF threesome, interacting sexually has more of an "Ewww" factor than two women in similar circumstances. This may be influenced by porn; FFM threesomes and FF pairings are often part of otherwise "straight" porn, while MMF threesomes and MM pairings in porn that also features women are part of a separate "bi" genre. Absolutely, and I think bisexual men probably have much more pressure to identify as gay than bisexual women. But I feel there is acceptance of hot females having sex and that's probably because it turns on a lot of heterosexual men. Matter of fact, there are women who are "motivational" bisexuals, that is straight women who have sex with other women only because a male partner insists on it to titillate him. But the bottom line is that while there is a growing acceptance of women being able to act out their curiosity, I feel as though there are certain restrictions put forth on that "acting out", such as I mentioned above. debbyski, check out http://www.alternet.org/sex/86736/. Great article Jorjor, thank you for the link! Why is a woman less of a person, or (my favorite) "dirty," because she has sex? Does a penis have some bizarre dirtymaking power that I'm unaware of? Every time I have sex, do I lose a bit of my moral compass?I did a clip on this subject Jojor: http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/F019FFF6-47F8-4D71-B5C8-5BCB57BDB009/ And just for you Jojor, I will reveal the reason I made this clip. At my job, we are required to do apartment inspections every 3 months and to say the tenants don't like them is an understatment. We had to write up quite a few tenant... You know, this strikes me as an interesting tangent. (Oh and I love tangents!) What, exactly, is a slut? What makes a person promiscuous? In our modern age, I think it is unrealistic to expect people to have only one sexual partner in their entire lives. I honestly don't know a single person who can truthfully say that of themselves. I think our sexuality has become less prescribed and more natural, and ultimately this is a good thing. However, what should the limits be in this new world? What, exactly, defines sexual loyalty in this day and age? What defines promiscuity? What line is it that a person crosses? At what point does sex stop being a blessing and start becoming destructive? R... What, exactly, is a slut? What makes a person promiscuous? It is the extent in which a woman fails to conform to "normal" appearence and/or behavior. Because I enjoy exercise and it makes me feel good about myself to treat my body as a temple of sorts and I'm proud of the way I look, I can easily be labeled a "slut" while wearing a sport's bra on a very hot summer day while jogging or doing hot sweaty work. Some might call me a slut because I chose to avoid further physical injury and did not fight back as a rape victim. But, let's get to the bottom line here. Men don't get called these names for being sexually active, do they OW? Which brings up the issue of monogamy and th... |
