AtlLiberal says: Also from the clip: "Government needs to get on with creating jobs, dealing with the budget deficit and other real problems and stop acting as a cheerleader for religious groups." I agree 100% with that sentiment. Here's were I get off the seperation of church and state boat. First of all there is nothing in the constitution itself stating that there must be a wall of seperation, rather it states that the government cannot establish a religion. Suggesting that people pray is not an establishment of religion (your taxes are not being funneled to any religious orginization). We can admit that religion plays a part in our culture without violating the intent of the constitutions establishment clause. The government is not required to be an atheistic organization. You are not required to jettison your religious beliefs when you enter government. Thanksgiving would be the next target of the people opposed to this prayer proclamation. First of all there is nothing in the constitution itself stating that there must be a wall of seperationThis is a red herring. For this argument to stand we'd also need to do away with "separation of powers", "fair trial", and "Bill of Rights". None of these specific words appear in the Constitution either. The government is not required to be an atheistic organization. This is a straw man argument. The government is a secular, not an atheistic organization. You are not required to jettison your religious beliefs when you enter government.Another non-issue. No one said anything about getting rid of peoples beliefs. People in government are p... If a religion needs state sponsorship to survive, then it must be a feeble and insecure institution. If you have the endorsement of an almighty god, why do you need a man-made state to hide behind? Two of the main reasons state sponsorship of religion was eschewed were a: the Constitutional Convention was composed of delegates from sects that despised each other so much (the sects, not the delegates) that they couldn't agree on whom to disenfranchise; and b: for similar reasons, ministers of the various denominations recoiled in horror at their rivals receiving tax monies. |
