OK pics. Are they round because it is easier to do the staircases?

Could be that they are round because it provides more of a panoramic view and dispersion of light.

They are typically built in coastal regions where wind-force tends to be strong. The rounded shape tends to deflect the force of winds, with a round tower, no matter what direction the wind comes from, it never strikes a flat surface. Hence round ones weather storms better.
