Caleythia says:

I don't know, this seems to be another incidence of applying human characteristics to dogs. Also in the article, it says, "Humorous behavior may be repeated because of the positive reaction received. In this case, you can’t say the dog has a sense of humor, but is acting on positive reinforcement." I think this may be closer to the truth.
