POPSRuffling Floridian's Feathers Predictably, seeing something like this angers many in the conservative state of Florida. If you're not Christian (and fundamentalist) you're definitly in the minority in Florida, particularly in the central portion where this is located. Notice the reporters telling phraseology. "...a billboard asking a provocative question...". Actually the question is not provocative at all. It is addressed directly to people who have doubtsd concerning their faith and could in fact feel comforted by knowing that there are others who share their viewpoint.

POPSNut Case Extrodinaire I haven't had the displeasure of coming across Allen Ball before and for that I'm grateful. Seldom have I met someone who is so bigoted and hateful as this individual. His solution to all the woes of this country. Christianity. Of course it's his own, right wing version. What a sanctimonious ass-hat.

POPSAnother Shill Makes a Fool of Himself Typical of the drivel from Faux News, here's a snippet showing that even the most rudimentary investigation shows them to be full of bull. But then that doesn't seem to affect the mewling zoombies that follow these jerks.

POPSHow Can This Be??? How in the world can a person be a decent, moral person without the promise of heaven or the threat of hell. Just what is this world coming to??? Now I'll carefully remove my tongue from my cheek.

POPSOur Natural Place in the World This is just the beginning of a 3 part essay that, for me, embodied the form of spirituality I regularly experience in my life. It's always a revelation when you see something coming from another mind that has so many points of commonality with your own thinking. Part 3 held the most significance for me.

POPSWe've Gotten Away With It For Years So It's OK I wonder how the superintendent would respond to a government organization that included on their letterhead the phrase "Uniontown - Only Christians Allowed", or "Uniontown - Jew Free"! It's mighty difficult for the privileged to see their own bigotry. Their defense? We've gotten away with it for years so it must be ok. What a bunch of wankers.
6
POPSDisfunction One phrase got me thinking. "God fearing men...". Of course, being an atheist, this doesn't apply to my worldview. But to the majority I wonder if they ever spent much time thinking about it? I always thought this relationship of fear/love was rather strange. Normally, people who are presented a fearful situation react in a flight or fight manner. But neither option is open to theists if they believe their god is all-powerful and everywhere. It seems to infantilize the relationship and cast it in the light of being with an abusing parent. At the same time there is the cognitive dissonance of loving this fearful entity. Most peculiar.

POPSCuriouser and curiouser To be fair, I suppose it's possible that there is some local ordinance that prevents "controversial" signs to be displayed in Des Moines. The article, clipped in its entirety, makes no mention of such. Perhaps the citizens of Des Moines are, for some reason, more sensitive to opposing views and the authorities are charged with preventing differing views to be seen by the locals. It makes one wonder if they allow bright colors in public or talking above a whisper? I know that loud, boisterous behavior has, in the past, caused me some discomfort. And we can't have that. Can we?

POPSReligion: Punishment Wins Every Time At its most basic, religion teaches a black/white view of reality. Good/bad, righteous/sinful, us/them, religious/atheist. And least we forget, heaven/hell. And make no mistake, punishment is a major component of the mix. In fact, it's sometimes difficult to keep up with all the smiting going on in their various holy books. Is it no wonder that a person who was evicted from an anger management class would be deeply influenced by the punishment aspects of religion? Yes, we must assume responsibility for our actions but in the case of religion to be punished for eternity is not only irrational but arguably sadistic and insane.
7
POPSIt's a movie, people! Since the first Potter movie came out there has been this ludicrous panic among some Christians that all their little darlings who view these movies will be recruited by the witch's cabal. And the insanity continues still!
7
POPSAnother Reason I'm an Atheist A simple search on Fitna will bring up numerous links to the film. Propaganda? Inflammatory? I viewed the film and it made me wonder why more Muslims were not outraged by the violence committed by their fellow Muslims. If the majority of Muslims are peaceful, why haven't they risen up against the "tiny minority" and silenced them?
9
POPSFloridians Upset! Not surprisingly, the good Christians in Florida are up in arms about those "militant" atheists. Out of curiosity I wonder what the ratio of religious to atheist billboards is?
5
POPSLegless Christians Stand! It's a Miracle! I appears that a large number of Christians still advocate the use of torture. How are we to explain this seemingly contradictory stance? The answer that immediately comes to mind is that Christians have not thought this out. Does this not go counter to Christian morality? Are Christians being duped? At first glance it seems that they are.
2
POPSBloomington Shies From Controversy How is this proposed ad materially different from one that hypothetically invites the public to the Yahoo Mega Church to discover God? Naturally there is no difference.
9
POPSPray or Govern? Also from the clip: "Government needs to get on with creating jobs, dealing with the budget deficit and other real problems and stop acting as a cheerleader for religious groups." I agree 100% with that sentiment.
14
POPSBelief in God or Social Contact One of the commenters on this clip made reference to people how hold no belief in god but go to church as "Sunday ritualists". Seeing as how important social relationships are to most people could the number of hidden atheists be much larger than acknowledged but is hidden because of fear of ostracism?
14
POPSThose Uppity Atheists I'm sure certain religionists are pining for the days when atheists kept quiet and in their place. I can't help but reflect on other minorities that have experienced the same situation recently. Once uncapped, there's no going back into the bottle.
7
POPSMisconceptions Like many concepts people hold, atheism is often viewed as a belief system filled with dogma and intent on pushing an "agenda". This article may help to dispel this false notion.
8
POPSWhat's the Difference? cont., Once it is understood that atheism is merely the absence of belief in any gods, it becomes evident that agnosticism is not, as many assume, a “third way” between atheism and theism. The presence of a belief in a god and the absence of a belief in a god exhaust all of the possibilities. Agnosticism is not about belief in god but about knowledge — it was coined originally to describe the position of a person who could not claim to know for sure if any gods exist or not.

POPSYawn... More dogma and witnessing without substance. Here he uses his lack of scientific understanding of evolution to back up his "argument".

POPSEthics and Morality Do right because it's the right thing to do - not for future gain. The best good deeds are done anonymously.

POPSRay "Banana" Comfort Strikes Again World Nut Daily never fails to deliver. This advert penned by the pooh-bah of irrationality would be hilarious if it weren't for the fact that there are a lot of pig ignorant (apology to pigs!) sheep out there ready to believe whatever this champion of the scientifically illiterate spews forth.
0
POPSConsider the Source Ray "Banana" Comfort has put up a billboard. It makes as much sense as his Banana As Proof of God argument. Go figure!
8
POPSMore Christian Persecution Once again we're witness to more outrage against Christian persecution. This time from that erudite philosopher of religion, Charlie Daniels. This'll get Joe Six Pack gnashing his teeth about those atheist Christ haters!
5
POPSRay "Banana" Comfort Has a New Book (Yawn!!!) The Banana God, Ray Comfort, just expelled another book out of his rectum of a brain. This Christian apologist is so over the top that his screeds are actually side splitting funny. Watch the YouTube classic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGMuIyBK5P4) for a taste of Comfort at his best. AS far as I'm concerned, Old Ray is a true representative of much of what's wrong with evangenitals these days. The only downside of posting this clip is that there are still enough science challenged folks out there that will accept what Comfort says as valid proof of their dogma. So be warned - if you flunked high school science you may be sucked into the "Comfort Zone".

POPSJake Jones - Irony Impaired Particularly amusing was the quote about pushing secularization down the throats of Americans. Could this possibly be a pot/kettle thing? Perhaps a bit of projection? I can't speak for Old Jake but my irony meter just pegged out.
6
POPSA Conspiracy of Silence The small clip from the end of an article from India brings up an interesting point that is largely ignored in the US. In some regards it is reminiscent of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy enacted by Clinton in the 90s in regards to gays in the military.
14
POPSOh No - He's Offended! On the other hand, atheists are regularly accused of being without morals or ethics by religious believers and that's OK??? The hypocrisy is mind blowing.
6
POPSThe Last Bigotry? In God soaked American the last pocket of bigotry seems to be directed towards atheists. I'd venture to say that this is exclusively based on the false notion, propagated by organized religion, that lack of belief in a supreme being equates to being without morals or ethics. It's interesting to view our Canadian neighbors take on this pernicious form of prejudice.
3
POPSPrayer to Remain - For Now A cornerstone for the incoming administration is the message of hope. This doesn't mean just for religious America but for all America.
7
POPSImagine the Opposite Consider a world in which people are offended by religious sloganeering. Consider a world where people take offense to having their reason questioned. Consider a world where people don't accept that you must abandon rational thought to be accepted.
