Notable quotes: "As a Christian I would not have liked it if they had used verses from the Quran, and if I had known about it, I probably would not have approved of them doing so," Ransom said. "The issue for us is about freedom of expression of Christianity." "But if the girls had decided to use something from the Quran, I feel in our community they would've received negative feedback." It seems pretty clear what is bothering these people. The writer of the article goes on: "Therein lies the bigger question -- is it freedom of religion for the protestors in Fort Oglethorpe or freedom of their religion? If it's just their religion, how is that constitutional?" He poses a good question. It's obvious that the citizens of N. Georgia are not worried about anyone but themselves and their particular religious sect. The N. Georgia hills are indeed beautiful. The people, not so much.

    Again, with the persecution?
    AtlLiberal
    by AtlLiberal  10-3-2009    2
Once again we're presented a picture of people believing that their overwhelming majority faith is somehow being persecuted. In fact, what the whining is all about is the erosion of Christian privilege above all other faiths or non-belief. These sheep simply don't grasp the concept of a secular government actually being a benefit to their belief system. Instead they view it as an attack against their religion. Naturally, these attitudes are being advanced by a media subset that is reaping an enormous financial gain by manipulating these rubes with false claims of losing their freedoms and being persecuted by a non-existent, frightening subculture bent on destroying their faith. There's a fool born every minute.

    by AtlLiberal  9-10-2009    1
If the allegations are true it would be criminal to disregard them. Yet, the more I follow this story the more I lean to the idea that this is a case of a teenage girl who is confused and has taken steps that make it difficult for her to retract. The most disturbing news to come out of the whole drama is the inclusion of the lawyer who was elemental in the political debauchery surrounding the Terri Schiavo case. The conservatives in Florida seem to have a natural talent of stepping in a pile of dog poo and then flinging it at anyone close by. Considering the underlying mistrust of Muslims that brews among conservatives this incident has the earmarks of being capable of evolving into a major political slime-fest.

One phrase got me thinking. "God fearing men...". Of course, being an atheist, this doesn't apply to my worldview. But to the majority I wonder if they ever spent much time thinking about it? I always thought this relationship of fear/love was rather strange. Normally, people who are presented a fearful situation react in a flight or fight manner. But neither option is open to theists if they believe their god is all-powerful and everywhere. It seems to infantilize the relationship and cast it in the light of being with an abusing parent. At the same time there is the cognitive dissonance of loving this fearful entity. Most peculiar.

Bill Donohue riles up the wing nuts again. It makes one wonder if he is capable of rational thought at all? Can he discern fact from fiction? Looks like no to all. It's sad that so many sheeple defend this person. IMO, this is parallel to the "war on Christmas" non-event that has become a yearly laughing point. If I was religious, I think I'd be very embarrassed by having this person in such an influential position. Later in the clip Donohue says: "It's not a secret, OK? And I'm not afraid to say it. That's why they hate this movie. It's about Jesus Christ, and it's about truth. It's about the Messiah." He later apologised for his remarks, saying he regretted the use of the word "controlled". :-(

Ratsy again shows his true colors and unleashes a diatribe against those who don't believe in his dogma. He mentions the tired argument about communism and Marxism as though these ideologies came about through the idea of atheism rather than an as attempt to set up a dictatorial and fascist form of government. I suspect his diatribe has more to do with the recent criticism of his dogma and falling church membership in Europe. Of course, he doesn't address the fact that the most violent and oppressive governments are also the most religious. He fails to recognize that the most successful European governments are the most secular.

From the article and the main point, as far as I'm concerned: But that doesn’t mean a lack of religious influence — on the contrary. Committed minorities have had a tremendous influence on cultures and even on politics. Just look at all the faith-inspired social-reform movements animated by people of faith. But Martin Luther King Jr. did not get the Civil Rights Act passed because he had the most Bible verses on his side but because he entered into the public square with compelling arguments, vision, and policy that ultimately won the day. Those faith-inspired movements are disciplined by democracy, meaning they don’t expect to win just because they are “Christian.” They have to win the debates about what is best for the common good by convincing their fellow citizens.

Creationists are really hooked on straw men. These science ignoramuses aren't aware that there is no controversy concerning evolution except what is being generated by the Discovery Institute. Yet people continue to buy into the Red Herring of "teach the controversy" and "present both sides". What they don't understand is that there aren't two sides to the issue. Yes, there are questions concerning the mechanisms of evolution but the concept itself is not questioned. And the idea of a creative intelligence behind the whole thing is simply religious dogma put forth as pseudo-science. Remember, these are politicians that are playing to their constituents. They both certainly are in need of a course or two on basic science methodology.

I found it eye opening that a majority of self designated Christians chose not to adhere to the central tenant of their religion. What ever became of the "only through me..." part of Christian dogma. Even though I find the whole idea of an afterlife as nothing more than wishful thinking, the idea that a majority of Christians go against the central belief of their own sect is in it's own way, encouraging. I admit to some confusion when it comes to the sample that believes that atheists can also go to heaven. Evidently they are ignorant of the basic definition of atheism. It's unfortunate that this majority has been so hidden while the rabid right wing has garnered so much attention. But that is just the reality of the spotlight these days. If you buy the media's take on things, three atheists speak for the millions of unheard from atheists. Oh well...

The end of this clip reflects on the "need" for balance. On the surface, balance and moderation appear to be positive elements. But are they? What if no critical thought has gone into an explanation of X. Should it be given the same weight as an explanation that is backed up with facts? Of course not. But the sad fact is that this notion of balance as gained a certain acceptance simple because it seems fair. Of course, fairness, which itself is a positive concept, has been bastardized in the pursuit of pushing an underlying agenda. Sometimes, an opposing thought is simply wrong and does not deserve to be placed on the scales of balance.
