POPSRuffling Floridian's Feathers Predictably, seeing something like this angers many in the conservative state of Florida. If you're not Christian (and fundamentalist) you're definitly in the minority in Florida, particularly in the central portion where this is located. Notice the reporters telling phraseology. "...a billboard asking a provocative question...". Actually the question is not provocative at all. It is addressed directly to people who have doubtsd concerning their faith and could in fact feel comforted by knowing that there are others who share their viewpoint.

POPSBible too sissified I wonder if all that crap about loving your fellow man will be nixed? Maybe they'll add a chapter on how the money changers were really the good guys and simply adhering to good capitalistic principles? According to the article they do feel that the bible has become emasculated! The also want to: "Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms as they develop; defective translations use the word "comrade" three times as often as "volunteer"; similarly, updating words which have a change in meaning, such as "word", "peace", and "miracle"."

POPSHyper-Patriotism in "Christian America" I have pride in this country. I also see its flaws and make an effort to change them. We live in a global society and holding the belief that we're somehow exceptional clouds reality to such an extent that correct decisions become increasingly difficult to adopt.

POPSSubstance or Teenage Angst? If the allegations are true it would be criminal to disregard them. Yet, the more I follow this story the more I lean to the idea that this is a case of a teenage girl who is confused and has taken steps that make it difficult for her to retract. The most disturbing news to come out of the whole drama is the inclusion of the lawyer who was elemental in the political debauchery surrounding the Terri Schiavo case. The conservatives in Florida seem to have a natural talent of stepping in a pile of dog poo and then flinging it at anyone close by. Considering the underlying mistrust of Muslims that brews among conservatives this incident has the earmarks of being capable of evolving into a major political slime-fest.

POPSOur Natural Place in the World This is just the beginning of a 3 part essay that, for me, embodied the form of spirituality I regularly experience in my life. It's always a revelation when you see something coming from another mind that has so many points of commonality with your own thinking. Part 3 held the most significance for me.

POPSZell, GA's answer to Ala's Jeff Sessions Message of the Day: It's ok to be racist if you're a has been senator or failed governor. This is pure red meat for the base. All you need are gods, guns and gays. It seems here that a little bit of the old faithful racism doesn't hurt either. I wonder if Zell and Beauregard are related?

POPSAnother Reason I'm an Atheist A simple search on Fitna will bring up numerous links to the film. Propaganda? Inflammatory? I viewed the film and it made me wonder why more Muslims were not outraged by the violence committed by their fellow Muslims. If the majority of Muslims are peaceful, why haven't they risen up against the "tiny minority" and silenced them?

POPSMust Be the Water Texas has always been an important harbinger when it comes to which textbooks are chosen for our public schools across the country. Publishers aren't willing to invest in printing costs (Texas buys a lot of books) without the rest of the nation going along. Now there's the possibility of a Christian Right-winger taking the reigns of the state education board in an already conservative state. Does this mean that Johnny will finally get to learn about Noah loading the dinosaurs on the ark in biology class? Stay tuned...

POPSLegless Christians Stand! It's a Miracle! I appears that a large number of Christians still advocate the use of torture. How are we to explain this seemingly contradictory stance? The answer that immediately comes to mind is that Christians have not thought this out. Does this not go counter to Christian morality? Are Christians being duped? At first glance it seems that they are.

POPSGimme That Ole Time Religion A clip for all you Right Wing Conservatives out there. Here's your dream come true. These Afghans really know how to keep a woman in her place!

POPSFrom the Heartland Good for Iowa for stepping out of the perceived stereotype of the close minded and ultra conservative mid-westerner. People of conscience and fairness seem to not adhere to geographical boundaries.
7
POPSMidwest Shows Up the Coasts Iowa, of all places, shows that sanity and compassion can be found anywhere. If there's hope in the heartland then maybe, just maybe, there is hope for the Bible Belt. And perhaps we should all send our condolences to Bryan English for his great loss ---- or not. I think I'll simply let him "mourn" in private. After all, it must be quite a loss to lose the ability to deprive a whole segment of the population of a basic right.

POPSWhatever... The Grand Obstruction Party truly is bereft of new ideas. Reading most any comment by a Republican these days makes one wonder if they all were abducted by aliens in 2000 and just returned to earth yesterday. Why would anyone take anything they say seriously? Let me make this clear - their Reagan Trickle Down plan does not work. We know this. Non-regulation does not work. We know this. Yet like mad men, they continue to tout the same actions to events and expect different results. We often here people say, "Americans aren't stupid". There is merit in that statement. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of some Republicans who rely on proven bad policy simply because it's the Conservative Way.
8
POPSChristian spokesperson Warning: the following clip will rot your brain and make you insane. It's hard to believe that one person could be so abjectly stupid.
4
POPSThis is the Best They've Got Along with hearing Conservative rehash of trickle down economics I suspect that the neo-con think tanks are running on empty. It's amusing to see that they have become parodies of themselves. I've never seen Beck. Do people actually buy this sort of drivel?
4
POPSFar Right Darling What can be said of Ann? I'd attempt a few words but my gag reflex takes over every time.
3
POPSExpected Reaction This is news? Any appointment left of Pat Robertson would roil the Right. I'm inclined to say "get over it". OK, I think I will -- get over it! Well, that felt good...

POPSJust Say No? How about Maybe? There appears to be a scientific black hole at the core of religious fundamentalists. Even forgetting that their religion is based on a bronze age middle eastern agrarian society which was not noted for it's scientific knowledge, their lack of understanding of human sexuality continues to astound.
5
POPSOur Christian Nation? Anti-intellectualism probably occurs across the nation but since I'm writing from a certain perspective it appears to me that areas of the deep south have embraced this stance with a tenacity not seen in other portions of the nation. From my states governor praying for rain on the steps of the state capitol to large groups attempting to "protect" our children from the evil effects of evolution, anti-intellectualism has been elevated to a virture and a point of pride. Having a liberal arts education, having studied the arts and sciences, bears the mark of a waste of time.

POPSThe Holler-Day Season The season of silliness is upon us. The Christian Holiday bunkers are in place and they've donned their battle fatigues. Under the Righteous O'Reilly Banner they are marching off to defend the True Believers against the vast (imaginary) hordes of heathens storming the Sacred Christmas Gates. "Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war..." Must leave now. I have creches to target with my arsenal of godless barbs. Happy Holidays!

POPSSome Sense While I do not share the writers position on religion in general I must give him points in highlighting the major problems with the present administration.
5
POPSZeitgeist of the US Clipped is the preamble to a very short article explaining what is meant by anti-science and some of the ramifications of it. Since there is an undercurrent in the US that is anti-science I thought this would be a nice introduction to this topic.
5
POPSSquare Pegs Something doesn't make sense. I suspect some people claiming to be atheists either lie, don't understand the meaning of atheist or the survey is flawed. As far as the great unwashed goes, it seems that most still cling to fairy tales and myths.

POPSThe Seat of Bigotry Ms. Phillips evidently doesn't engage her brain before putting her mouth in motion. Her hate filled diatribe is more suited to the middle of the last century than today's reality. Unfortunately, her sentiment is rather common. If one substitutes Jew or Muslim or Black or any other non-Christian minority for atheist it immediately becomes apparent that she is a bigoted, angry person in search of a scapegoat. Given that near 85% of Americans are Christian, her blaming the 12% for all the problems society faces is ludicrous and is indicative of profound projection on her part. Her spew sounds like it was transcribed from a speech recorded in 1930s Germany, not 21st century America. Really sad.
8
POPSBlaming the Victim It seems it's become de rigueur for the Conservatives to blame the victims these days. IMO, it shows how out of touch these conservative pundits truly are. BTW, for those not familiar, the SPLC is a watchdog organization dedicated to exposing hate groups and suing them out of business. They've done impressive work particularly against the KKK and the American Aryan party.

POPSHow Obama Became a Muslim? The short clip is a snippet from the Times illuminating story about Andy Martin, a disturbed individual notorious for filing unsubstantiated lawsuits to such an extent that a federal judge barred him from further filing without approval. Jerome Corsi, author of Obama Nation, opens his book with a quote from Mr. Martin. The story is a look at the slimy underside of Conservative attack politics. One, regrettably, that McCain and his attack dog Palin, have embraced recently.
2
POPSIfill Under Scrutiny I found it interesting that World News Daily is mentioned as the source that broke this "story". Anyone not familiar with this particular web site will not be surprised that they have concerns about Ifill. The clip mentions that WND is a "right-leaning" Web site. That's like calling the Pope slightly religious. Admittedly, my only exposure to this site has been through articles by DeSousa (far right religious nut), I'd take anything they wrote with a pound of salt.

POPSNew Show to Debut Elisabeth Hasselbeck? This is the best they can do? I just might tune in for laughs. Maybe that's their intent. Yeah, that's got to be it.

POPSThe Universal Candidate Palin continues to amaze her supporters. Next week she's scheduled to walk across the Bering Strait to meet with all the Russian diplomats she's been waving to. Fox News demigod Sean Hannity will have an exclusive interview with Sarah as she walks across the water.

POPSGrowing Militancy Another look at this dangerous group of right wing fanatics that plan to take over the US and impose their own brand of hell and brimstone government.

POPSOy vey Intolerance is catching on across religious lines. I say burqas for all!
7
POPSMcCain's Desperate Move While it may be that all VP picks are politically motivated, the good choices usually are those that besides being politically advantageous are also beneficial to the nation. After the nation discovers who Sarah Palin is and what she believes I think that McCain will realize what a colossal blunder he has made. Or maybe not??
5
POPSFear and Loathing in the Republican Party A new low, even for Republicans. Not content with associating Obama with Hitler, now he's being portrayed as the Antichrist! And sadly, enough brain dead fundamentalists are around to make this an issue.
7
POPSThose Damn Liberals Intolerance, hate, prejudice. Still alive and very active in large portions of the US. Incidents like this remind us to never become complacent and assume that actions like this are rare or isolated. Almost 8,000 hate crimes in 2006. And according to the Southern Poverty Law Center they are on the rise.

POPSCreationist Shows His Stuff Here's a pretty typical tirade by a fundamentalist Creationist that pretty much touches on all the points that Creationists get wrong all the time. About the only point he makes is that he's pretty ignorant about science and adheres to the talking points of the conservative right. My question is how many of these proselytizers will have to be proven wrong before they're eventually shamed into admitting that they've been lied to. The sad part is that many certainly have children who are also subjected to these ignorant views thus the ignorance is allowed to be passed along generational lines.
