POPSDown Under Bigotry At first I thought this must be a parody piece but then I read that it was written by the vice-chancellor of the Australian Catholic University. A simple substitution of just about any minority in the place of atheists reveals the blatant prejudice and bigotry shown by this fine Christian.
9
POPSHate on the Rise This took me by surprise. Georgia is one of five states that doesn't have laws related to hate crimes. Given the simmering prejudice that is still prevalent here I suppose I'm not too shocked. It took us literally years to rid our state flag of the Rebal flag. All, of course, in the name of "preserving our heritage". Many were not taken in by that particular canard.
3
POPSLegalized Prejudice I would suggest that legislating bigotry is not the way to go here.I understand that this is not a clear cut issue with some who wish to hold on to their religious dogma that discriminates against gays. Too bad! Find another line of "work". Perhaps consider snake oil salesman.
9
POPSPrivilege and Oppression A thoughtful article about the notion of Christian privilege and using this to justify anti-gay prejudice. And before some get their pitchforks out, no, it doesn't apply to all Christians. But there is a sizable chunk of Christians who probably do hold these views.
7
POPSMisconceptions Like many concepts people hold, atheism is often viewed as a belief system filled with dogma and intent on pushing an "agenda". This article may help to dispel this false notion.
8
POPSWhat's the Difference? cont., Once it is understood that atheism is merely the absence of belief in any gods, it becomes evident that agnosticism is not, as many assume, a “third way” between atheism and theism. The presence of a belief in a god and the absence of a belief in a god exhaust all of the possibilities. Agnosticism is not about belief in god but about knowledge — it was coined originally to describe the position of a person who could not claim to know for sure if any gods exist or not.

POPSThe Last Bigotry? In God soaked American the last pocket of bigotry seems to be directed towards atheists. I'd venture to say that this is exclusively based on the false notion, propagated by organized religion, that lack of belief in a supreme being equates to being without morals or ethics. It's interesting to view our Canadian neighbors take on this pernicious form of prejudice.
6
POPSHow Low Can He Go? What is that smell? Oh, yes. Fear and desperation. Mixed with a healthy dose of hate and prejudice.
9
POPSBye-bye Tax Exemption The last part of the clip is telling. Replace the words "secularist" and "atheists" with Jews and Blacks. How does that sound to you now? Fear and prejudice is one way to get people to change their minds. As far as flaunting the IRS rules regarding non-endorsement of political figures from the pulpit, I say go right ahead but be prepared to lose your tax exempt status.
7
POPSThose Damn Liberals Intolerance, hate, prejudice. Still alive and very active in large portions of the US. Incidents like this remind us to never become complacent and assume that actions like this are rare or isolated. Almost 8,000 hate crimes in 2006. And according to the Southern Poverty Law Center they are on the rise.
1
POPSNader - One Trick Pony Admiration for past good deeds aside, Nader presents these days as bitter, self-absorbed, and out of touch. Now he's accusing Obama of attempting to "talk white". I'm not even sure what the hell he means by this except perhaps a twisted view into his own cultural stereotypes
5
POPSMormons Hoping Fear and Prejudice Will Rule the Day As explicitly spelled out in the Mormon letter this is a solely religious viewpoint. So why would they expect others to respect or obey their edicts? If they choose to do so it's their business. Otherwise this is a matter mostly of rights that are being denied to a segment of the population. Bias and prejudice aside, there is no rational reason that gays be denied the rights afforded straight people. Majority rule does not imply correctness. Have we forgotten the manner in which we denied rights to Blacks? Have we forgotten the way we denied rights to Native Americans? The majority was behind these oppressive measures too.

POPSCulture Clash I've wrestled with the question of cultural differences all my life it seems. As a cohesive element it seems to be effective. Yet the dark side to this cohesiveness is that it is divisive also. In addition, morally speaking, cultural issues like those addressed in this clip are simply wrong from a humanist point of view. There is nothing moral about actions such as this. They are antiquated, misogynistic, throwbacks that have no place in 21st Century life. Anyone who defends such heinous acts is as morally bankrupt as the killer father.
8
POPSClown Power!!! I would have loved to have been there to witness this first hand. Hate groups (an estimated 888 this year; a growth of 48% since 2000) evidently can't respond to ridicule and clowns! Their entire existence is predicated by feeding on fear and ignorance. Derision, laughter, and mockery seem perfectly well suited to deal with such people and bypasses the anger and hatred that fuels them. Brilliant!
1
POPS"Repelled" Opens Soon While this "documentary" has been widely panned by many people it will have to be the misinformed and scientifically ignorant that save it. Considering the gullibility of the American public and their abysmal understanding of science and evolution I wouldn't be too surprised if this hatchet job did better than expected. Though, I would be extremely disappointed in the level of intelligence and lack of judgment in the movie going public.
9
POPSBigotry in Illinois Far from being unique, this latest outburst is simply one of the loudest. There is a wide spread prejudice against non-theists in the US that to a large degree is condoned by a large portion of the population. It's only when the bigots become shrill and irrational, like Rep. Davis did, that it becomes news. Maybe this could be a good thing. It brings it out in the open.
9
POPSReligious Tests? Once again we're presented with examples of outright bigoted prejudice. Perhaps not surprising if it was put forth from a stereotypical Nascar dad but from a contender to the presidency it seems a bit out of line.
7
POPSGrandpa McCain Don't Like Them Atheists! Promulgating the idea of bigoted, separatist thought seems to take up a lot of the energies of the Republicans these days. Of course this has been their bread and butter issue for years. Give us someone to hate and forget about the real issues that plague the common man. They're the first to cry foul over class issues but they certainly have no qualms about using them to instill fear and prejudice if it suits their corporate aims.
4
POPSReligious Dogma Invades Healthcare Cline makes a good point that professionals like doctors and pharmacists knowingly enter professions that could compromise their religious beliefs. What could be their justification for then using these religious beliefs to refuse services to certain individuals?
2
POPSLaw Abiding Immigrants Another straw man that ultra nationalists love to offer shows that it has no legs. With much of present day conservatism based on fear manipulation of the population this study indicates what a little sunshine can do to rank prejudice and bigotry.
4
POPSHope For the Future While the future of this election is still undecided, I catch a glimmer of hope by the irrelevance of race among young people. I've fought on the sidelines since the sixties for equality for all peoples and it seems a cultural shift is occurring. For a substantial segment of the population to be unconcerned about race is a collossal breakthrough in societal change. I think it was understood that this was a generational problem and would not vanish at the drop of a coin. Reality shows that racism is still rampant, particularly among less educated peoples however this election has demonstrated what I'd view as substantial progress in large scale shifts in the countries views. This pleases me beyond words.
1
POPSBigotry Alive and Well in Dixie What I didn't include in the clip was that this County Commissioner is 82 years old. I fervently hope that his comment is more of a generational issue than a regional issue. I suspect it's both. Living in this southern bulwark of Republican Conservatism I'm almost immune to comments like this. Not from politicians so much but from the man on the street. To live in a country that is 85% Christian it's ironic to hear this much hate and so little compassion.
3
POPSProvocateurs I know they have a right to voice their dogma but something deep within me become nauseous when I read something like this.
2
POPSBattling Hate Groups The last sentence of this clip made me spew coffee out of my nose. "Christian deportment"? Is the Klan getting soft? Probably not. More than likely they're amending their tactics to recruit new members which I hope are becoming harder and harder to find.
7
POPSTheocrasy and Bigotry This anti-gay sentiment seems to be very strong in Africa. With all the problems this poor continent has they really must focus on issues that matter instead of bigoted and backwards notions on sexuality.
2
POPSCollege Hate Perhaps the better response to racist actions such as this is to ignore or ridicule them instead of giving them publicity. If this was the doings of an individual than it seems that notoriety would only encourage rather than diminish the behavior. To clarify my stance, I still think the person should be held responsible for this action. I just wonder about the news attention paid to it. I think, an argument could be made that the benefit of our knowing about this event doesn't outweigh the harm that could be caused by publicizing it.
6
POPSRomney and Atheists (cont) "Matt Rhoades, communications director for Romney, condemned the flyer. "Attacks of religious bigotry have absolutely no place in politics today. It's unfortunate other camps stoop to such levels." (It's not clear, however, that the group has ANY affiliation to any other GOP campaign.)" The above brings back memories of Bush the First:
3
POPS"Christian" Pharmacists Rebel Perhaps the story should have started "Two Washington pharmacists and a pharmacy owner have sued the State of Washington for trampling on their right to punish dirty sluts." How long before we see stocks beside the blood pressure machines?

POPSLocal Issue Showcases Bigotry From a local paper. This short clip exposes the blatant lies people tell to cover their underlying bigotry. The older I get the less patience I have for such outright prejudice. I live in a mixed culture community and find the people sincere, interesting, and hard working. In other words, just like most other people I run into. Is that so hard to fathom?
7
POPSIt's Not Just A Muslim Problem Yes, this is an extreme example compared to the US but unfortunately the fact remains that in our religious soaked country the patriarchal mentality is still supreme. It views half of the country as somehow inferior. It makes me sick.
3
POPSAtheists in Foxholes -- again Once again the old canard is dredged up. Mr. Saunders then goes on and tries to make light of what he considers a silly position taken by atheists. No matter how he wishes to paint it, bigotry is bigotry.
