POPSSecularism... Complete secularism: be careful what you ask for... you just may get it!

POPSIntellectuals are fallible! Interesting--particularly the observation that intellectuals "idealize foreign ideologies because the foreign models are not seen in action." They lack the hindsight of experience of seeing the foreign ideology fail; and lack the foresight to be wary of arbitrary changes that might destabilize their own culture.

POPSWeird Brooch or Pin with Spider in Spiderweb I would like to know the age and significance of this piece of costume jewelry. It has such a weird design, kind of ugly, with a spider, fly, and spider web. Are the end shapes baskets, crowns, crinolines, hoop skirts, funnels (as in funnel-web spider)? It is spiritual and mysterious, and the symbols might be of Jung, like dream symbols. The spider, web, and egg or dewdrop could be about self-search, self-awareness, subconsciousness... ? It's heavy and old-fashioned. Have you seen one like it? I'm really curious, even after it sells. Would it be real jewelry (that a lady would wear every day) or just made for a Halloween costume? I've searched, but couldn't find a similar one.

POPSJapanese Fashion: Paranoid + Crazy + Stupid This is just weird on weird with weird sauce! I've always been amused by the fact that people who live in safe countries are often the most afraid of crime, but this goes far beyond the mere synchronicity of bourgeois ennui and paranoia. While this will probably be a big hit at the Peter R. H. Sellers Memorial School for Espionage and Sleuthing, I can't imagine how impossibly stupid someone would have to be to ACTUALLY fall for it. LOOK! You can see her sneakers sticking out from the bottom of the "vending machine!" Can you imagine someone hiding in this? There is something really messed up with Japan these days, on a monumentally surreal level!

POPSNew Research on Eczema (2007) Another interesting bit of new research on skin disease. This article points to a possible deficiency in the immune system--the lack of a certain natural antibiotic (or antimicrobial peptide) that would destroy the offending culprit that causes the outbreak. Interestingly, this one links skin problems with susceptibility to asthma...

POPSStudy of Microbiology: Key to Explaining Skin Disease? Dermatologists treat outbreaks of every type of skin infection with expensive creams. They always see the outbreak: red skin, pimples, etcetera--and treat it in the most superficial way. If they mention microbes at all, it is only as a vague reference to "yeast" or "bacteria." In recent years, it does seem that more of them will prescribe an antibiotic, and that helps treat the immediate problem. I wish they'd work on a cure, or at least a long-term plan for chronic outbreaks... something besides the trial-and-error of one expensive prescription cream after another!
