POPSScientology recruiting via facebook? I was playing poker on facebook, & suddenly realized the advertisement on the left pointed to a vacancy for the company U-Man. Normally, I wouldn't click through, but the name U-Man grabbed my attention since I happen to know it's a scientology affiliated organization "selling their Tech" in management circles. Are they're trying to "get some raw meat into the shop"? And it just so happens I'm looking for work right now. What do you think, should I apply? Should I mention that I graduated doing thesis on Scientology? Sure they must be interested ... ;D Also: props to facebook for directing this ad to me. That's some pretty nifty targeted advertising.

POPSBiocultural Evolution in the 21st Century: The Evolutionary Role of Religion My outline introduces the concept of biocultural evolution, particularly with reference to the Twentieth Century and the prospects for the Twenty-First Century. I then explore the concept of complex distributed systems to characterize all highly creative processes in both culture and nature. Subsequently, I turn to the problem of complexity horizons and the challenge that these present for traditional moral reflections. Humans are then characterized as a Lamarckian wild card in epic of evolution. I close by discussing the evolutionary role of religion. POPSTips from Thomas Edison on Living Optimistically Dr. Martin Seligman, the director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center, and author of Learned Optimism, has studied optimists and pessimists for 25 years. His research has found: Optimists * Less depression than pessimists * Better results than pessimists in most areas of life * Longer lifespan * Healthier than pessimists * Better than pessimists at work and in school * More friends and better social lives Pessimists * More depression than optimists * Inertia rather than activity in the face of setbacks * Feels bad subjectively–blue, down worried, anxious * Poor physical health * Self-fulfilling; pessimists don’t persist in the face of challenges and thus fail more frequently, even when success is attainable * Even when pessimists turn out to be right, they still feel worse than deluded optimists

POPSOpen Source Data Recovery Tools An overview of some software & live discs . See source for a decent overview and review. I'm going to explore various ways you can use open source solutions to recover data, bring dead systems back to life, and save your bacon in general. Many of the solutions described here run cross-platform (Lin/Win/Mac), but some of them are *NIX-only and will be described as such.

POPS125 Fake Cancer 'Cures' You Should Avoid I only clipped the names of the persons/corporations responsible. Watch out for these. See source for the complete list. The products contain ingredients such as bloodroot, shark cartilage, coral calcium, cesium, ellagic acid, Cat's Claw, an herbal tea called Essiac, and mushroom varieties such as Agaricus Blazeii, Shitake, Maitake, and Reishi. These products claim to cure, treat, mitigate or prevent disease, and these products have not been shown to be safe and effective for their labeled conditions of use. Examples of fraudulent claims for these products include: * "Treats all forms of cancer" * "Causes cancer cells to commit suicide!" * "80% more effective than the world's number one cancer drug" * "Skin cancers disappear" * "Target cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone" * "Shrinks malignant tumors" * "Avoid painful surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other conventional treatments"

POPS'The Cube', by Jim Henson (rare colored version) This '69 version by Jim Henson is more mysterious, psychological & philosophical and lacks the violence of the later sci-fi/horror films: The Cube, Cube 2: Hypercube and Cube Zero. It's supposed to be in better quality than the original black/white version, but I doubt that since it's in .flv. I included some links to wikipedia & imdb should you be curious for more.

POPSA Brief Guide to World Domination or: "How to Live a Remarkable life in a Conventional World" “Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” -Alan Keightley “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” -Martin Luther King, Jr. Final Thoughts: 1) You don’t have to live your life the way other people expect you to. 2) The world is waiting for you to figure out what only you can contribute. Take as much time as you need to find the answer, and then get started on it. See pdf

POPSThe Nehalem Preview: Intel Does It Again ]... for a 20 - 50% increase in performance, total system power consumption only went up by 10%. ... Final Words: First keep in mind that these performance numbers are early, and they were run on a partly crippled, very early platform. With that preface, the fact that Nehalem is still able to post these 20 - 50% performance gains says only one thing about Intel's tick-tock cadence: they did it. We've been told to expect a 20 - 30% overall advantage over Penryn and it looks like Intel is on track to delivering just that in Q4. At 2.66GHz, Nehalem is already faster than the fastest 3.2GHz Penryns on the market today. At 3.2GHz, I'd feel comfortable calling it baby Skulltrail in all but the most heavily threaded benchmarks. This thing is fast and this is on a very early platform, keep in mind that Nehalem doesn't launch until Q4 of this year.
