POPS How modern evangelicals are ignoring their own history Today's Christian conservatives often note that Jefferson's famous line declaring that the first amendment had created “a wall separating church and state” was not in the Constitution but in a private letter. But in that letter, Jefferson was responding to one sent to him by a group of Baptists in Danbury, Conn. We usually read Jefferson's side of that exchange. It's worth re-reading what the Danbury Baptists had to say because it reminds us that for the 18th-century evangelicals, the separation of church and state was not only required by the practicalities of their minority status, but was also demanded by God. “Religions is at all times and places a matter between God and individuals,” the Baptists wrote, warning that government “dare not assume the prerogatives of Jehova and make Laws to govern the Kingdom of Christ.” Government had no business meddling in the affairs of the soul, where there is only one Ruler.

POPSTesticles and evolution More Unintelligent Design. "The site of human testicles seems a bizarre anomaly from an evolutionary point of view, like positioning the driver of an armored vehicle in a sack strapped to the bumper."

POPSHow to Photograph a Ghost More tips at the source. After a few beers this could be a fun party game. Oooh, imagine telling ghost stories around a campfire and then going on a ghost photo hunt afterwards. Fun, fun! (Don't anybody mention the Blair Witch Project or I might get to scared to try this.).

POPSBrain Study Shows Why Revenge Is Sweet "Theory and experimental evidence shows that cooperation among strangers is greatly enhanced by altruistic punishment," Fehr said. "Cooperation among strangers breaks down in experiments if altruistic punishment is ruled out. Cooperation flourishes if punishment of defectors is possible."

POPSRapid Retreat of Glaciers Confirm Anomaly of Melt Take a look at the before and after pictures that show the melting of the glacier in about 2.5% of the time the glacier has existed. Yes, these glaciers lasted 7,000 years, but couldn't stand up to the advance of pollution and climate change in Western Canada.

POPSAlone In Life, Alone In Death "She would tell me, 'Buddy, I don't know what I would do without you.' Or she'd say, 'Sit down, Buddy, and stay awhile.' Aww, such a sad story. I think I read somewhere that in the western world, one in three people lives alone. That leaves a lot of room for loneliness or isolation. I'm not a big people-person myself. (Who would have thunk it? *LOL*) Anyway, some people prefer solitude and like it that way. Some suffer tremendously. How will you know, if you don't reach out? Don't let this happen to your neighbour (or their cats!). Rest in peace Mrs Ballard. (Would somebody nearby; neighbours, police, rspca, please get those cats picked up! What is wrong with people!? Isn't one sad death enough? Geeez. )

POPSNeptune Climate Change: Solar link? And for Earth too? Too soon to tell. But we should know more in the next few years; from the article: In summary, if Neptune's atmosphere is indeed responding to some variation in solar activity in a manner similar to that of the Earth albeit with a temporal lag , then we predict a multi-year “flattening” (slope change) in the steady rise of Neptune's brightness for a few years, and a subsequent rise thereafter Very intriguing!

POPSMercury's core may have iron showers. It may be some time before this can be proven, but they must reconsider some assumptions as they must with every exception to the rule. They believe it has an iron core because it has magnetic field. Perhaps they can send vibrations through somehow and study the echo in the same way they use a seismic echo from an earthquake to learn more about the earth's core. This idea, would no doubt have been considered, along with others. The question may be, how close to the surface of mercury the source of the vibration should be, the nature of the wave, and whether it can be done economically. Of course before then a completely different method may be discovered that will give an accurate result, but is as yet locked in the future, and beyond anything we can imagine at the moment.

POPSArctic summer ice anomaly shocks scientists Satellite observations in the past couple of years have also shown that the extent of perennial ice is rapidly declining, but this strange condition in late August marks the first time the perennial ice pack appears to exhibit thinner and more mobile conditions in the European sector of the Central Arctic than in earlier years.
