POPSA greater evil is more likely as America wakes up to the awesome...
Beside the effective destruction of the Iraqi state, these include the revitalising of militant Islamism and enhancement of the international appeal of the al-Qaida brand; the eruption for the first time in modern history of internecine war between Sunni and Shia - "a trend that reverberates in other states of mixed confessional composition"; the alienation of most sectors of Turkish politics from the west, and the stimulation of authoritarian nationalism there; the strengthening of a nuclear-hungry Iran; and a new regional rivalry, pitting the Islamic Republic of Iran and its allies, including Syria, Hizbullah and Hamas, against Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan. For the US, the world is now, as a result, a more dangerous and hostile place. At the end of 2002, what is sometimes tagged al-Qaida Central in Afghanistan had been virtually destroyed and there was no al-Qaida in Iraq. In 2007, there is an al-Qaida in Iraq; parts of the old are creeping back; there are al-Qaida emulator

POPSHow to Photograph a Ghost More tips at the source. After a few beers this could be a fun party game. Oooh, imagine telling ghost stories around a campfire and then going on a ghost photo hunt afterwards. Fun, fun! (Don't anybody mention the Blair Witch Project or I might get to scared to try this.).

POPSWhy Archaeology of Holy Lands is So Important I recommend Norman Cantor's sizzling history of Judaeism, 'The Sacred Chain', a bit dated now but shows how such work has demonstrated that the first millennium or so of received Jewish 'history' is fable rather than factual.

POPSMessy Truth about Georgia Article deals with US foreign policy. What's horribly remarkable about this human tragedy is how utterly predictable have been many responses by those unwilling (or unable?) to consider the situation in its full historical complexity.

POPSHow To Survive Scary Places Rule 11. If you hear demonic howling and wailing and see light streaming out of the attic, DO NOT go up there!! OMG, you would not believe how many people just have to investigate.

POPSMatt Taibbi: Full Metal McCain You'd never know it from listening to McCain, whose kickoff speech is the same election-year diatribe that Republicans have been giving for decades, one long broadside against those goddamned overgrown Sixties weenie liberals who hate the flag, love the bomb-tossing enemies of America and are bent on the twin goals of ending the system of free enterprise and placing every aspect of our lives under government control. McCain pegs Obama as a man who wants to take America "backward," to the failed ideas of the Sixties. "I'm surprised that a young man has bought into so many failed ideas!" he says, to furious applause. Then, spitting out a forced, ugly laugh that he must have practiced many (but not enough) times in the bathroom mirror of the Straight Talk Express, he adds, "That's not change we can believe in!"

POPSRemember the forgotten hero who saved the world Apparently this kind of thing has happened more than once. What scares me is that the technology that "monitored" nuclear weapon launches and actually controlled launchers could easily fit in a button today... I still remember that rumor that the default code for the missle silos was "00000" (so as to be easily entered when needed)... I think it was indeed a rumor, but I'm too scared to find out ;)

POPSThe Island of Madness A family recently sought to buy the island and build a holiday home on it but they left the first night there and refused to comment on what happened. The only fact that we do know is that their daughters face was ripped open and required fourteen stitches.
