In light of some of the recent conversations on the site about the pop-able character limit, I’ve been thinking about some of the factors that influence whether a clip gets popped. It seems to me that these are 5 factors that play a key role in determining a clip’s “pop-worthiness”

Simply the best way to learn languages.
    Socratoad
    by Socratoad  6-3-2008    11
I just listened to an interview with the founder of this site/software on the radio. and was quite impressed. To me it sounded like a superior way to learn other languages, something I've always wished to do. I am able to semi-converse in a limited number of languages, especially after a couple of glasses of backbone.

Thinking ahead: Bacteria anticipate coming changes in their environment
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  6-15-2008    5
To test this idea, the researchers exposed a population of E. coli to different temperatures and oxygen changes, and measured the gene responses in each case. The results were striking: An increase in temperature had nearly the same effect on the bacterium's genes as a decrease in oxygen level. Indeed, upon transition to a higher temperature, many of the genes essential for aerobic respiration were practically turned off. To prove that this is not just genetic coincidence, the researchers then grew the bacteria in a biologically flipped environment where oxygen levels rose following an increase in temperature. Remarkably, within a few hundred generations the bugs partially adapted to this new regime, and no longer turned off the genes for aerobic respiration when the temperature rose.

Obama's tire pressure remark - fact vs fiction
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  8-4-2008    10
McCain has responded to Obama's suggestion that we better maintain our cars in ways that promote fuel efficiency with childish (yet somehow effective) criticism. The amazing thing these days is that facts don't seem to matter. McCain is jumping on Obama with lies and accusations that, in my opinion, discredit his own reputation for running clean, dignified campaigns.
