POPSBritain Pulls Plug on Al Gore Interesting. I would not have guessed that this impact would have been so great. I would have assumed that total household consumption -- and this would have only involved the portion of households watching the concert -- was outsized by consumption of other users. Are our grids that fragile?

POPSFree Speech Ain't Free "Everybody gets to say their piece. That's the deal. Even if half the world considers that "piece" total BS. Face it, half of what WE believe usually turns out to be total BS. Beliefs have this nagging tendency to mutate over time. It wasn't long ago they burned people as witches for not thinking the world was flat. Wasn't it Cardinal Richelieu who said treason is just a matter of dates?"

POPSGet Out of Your Own Way In ways we are only beginning to understand, the synapses and neurons in the human nervous system work in concert to perceive the world around them, to learn from their perceptions, to remember important experiences, to plan ahead, and to decide and act on incomplete information. In a rudimentary way, they predetermine our choices.

POPSAncient Chinese Bells The importance of that discovery grows when we realize that it took the West a thousand years to develop the cathedral bell, and we didn't have it until the middle ages. Bells are very hard to make, yet China had these remarkably sophisticated Zhong bells during the Golden Age of Athens. The bells produce a rich tone, they take far less bronze to get it than a cathedral bell, and then they deliver two sounds for the cost of one. It's easy to look right at something that's very sophisticated without seeing the sophistication. It took us eighty years to catch on to these remarkable, but unassuming, bells. The best inventions are like that. In the best inventions, elegance masquerades as simplicity.

POPSRead the Constitution I hate to say this but I believe McCain has gone off the deep end. His comments recently have been more and more divorced from reality. As far as Christian Nationalists go maybe they should try reading the Constitution and the Treaty of Tripoli. Read in concert these documents leave little to the imagination on which to hang their God hats. Naturally, they can still put their God hats on. They just can't use the Religious Police to force others to wear the aforementioned head gear.

POPSBush 'may convert to Catholicism' Yesterday the Vatican was seething at rumours that there was much more to it than protocol: George Bush, lifelong Methodist, was about to convert. The Vatican differs from the White House on immigration and the death penalty but on other issues including stem cell research, gay marriage and abortion there has been, as the Catholic daily L'Avvenire put it, "total harmony." .. Independent He'll have to become a Christian first, won't he?

POPSWhen Men Were Turned Into Sex Machines...
"In the same programme there was also a urologist from Mikkeli, who was admirably honest in describing how impotence drugs are prescribed. He says that his youngest patients have been 16 and 17 years old...nothing wrong with the boys, but lack of experience and uncertainty might cause temporary inability to perform. The doctor says that prescribing the medicine for a young person was acceptable, because with its help, the boys were able to get their sex lives going without having to worry about confronting an embarrassing situation. that the medicine could be dropped later, when confidence with the partner had reached the stage at which performance pressure would not be a problem. There it is, the core of what is now accepted as a sex life. Men need to be capable, and durable. Who cares if there is any emotion involved, to say nothing of trust and a sense of partnership. There’s plenty of time for that later, once the technical performance is made flawle
