POPSUSA: Panel votes to restore abstinence education money Late last night, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) pushed through an amendment in the Senate Finance Committee authorizing $50 million in funding for abstinence-only programs as part of Health Care Reform- despite over 10 years of evidence that these programs do not work. POPS2008-06-12: Senate voting on an 18-month extension of Title V abstinence-only-until-marriage funding In 1996, Congress signed into law the Personal Responsibility & Work Opportunities Reconciliation Act, or "welfare reform." Attached was the provision, later set out in Section 510(b) of Title V of the Social Security Act, appropriating $250 million dollars over five years for state initiatives promoting sexual abstinence outside of marriage as the only acceptable standard of behavior for young people. Diese grundsätzlich (auch) kritische Grundhaltung der eigenen wie anderen Religionen gegenüber bezieht sich auch auf das Gottesverständnis, d.h., mit der unterrichtlichen Behandlung der Theodizeeproblematik (wenn es Gott gibt, warum lässt er das Böse zu?) wird Gott selbst als 'fragwürdig' thematisiert und eben nicht als unhinterfragbar vermittelt. Kein Entwurf für einen islamischen Religionsunterricht hat bisher gezeigt, dass er die Theodizeefrage so ernst nimmt, dass er potentiell die Sekpsis von Schülern gegenüber Allah akzeptieren würde bis dahin, die Existenz Allahs zu bestreiten. Gleiches gilt für die Entstehung des Koran bzw. seiner göttlichen Legitimierung.

POPSLaw and Order Populism Two young thugs beat up and almost killed a 76-year-old in a Munich subway station. They attacked him because he told them to stop smoking in the train. The incident might lead people to ask what price is to be paid for forcing whole social groups and whole generations into an underclass without a future. It would be good for the whole of society if one could ensure that people are safe in parks and in the subway . But that is not what people are talking about: they are talking about "violent foreigners." These people are to be deported or put in re-education camps – such are the imaginative proposals of the Christian Democrats – at the very least, the punishments for young offenders should be drastically increased. The law-and-order populists who are now taking to their soapboxes have to be told: prisons are not appropriate institutions for learning how to live the right life. They are rather academies of violence.

POPSSchöne Bescherung im Biologieunterricht Intelligent Design mit Wissenschaft nichts zu tun, wie es uns die Neokreationisten und nun auch Ministerin Wolff und ihre publizistischen Mitstreiter weismachen wollen. Sie redet von »erstaunlichen Übereinstimmungen« zwischen Darwin und Bibel, von »Erklärungsmustern«, die der Schöpfungsgeschichte »nicht widersprechen«. Gott »formte aus dem Ackerboden alle Tiere des Feldes«? Das ist eine wunderbare Metapher, wie auch die Bibel wunderbare Literatur ist. Wir mögen das glauben, aber im Biologieunterricht hat dieses »Erklärungsmuster« nichts zu suchen. In diesem Ansinnen vereinen sich prämoderne, romantische Attacken gegen die »kalte Vernunft« und postmoderne Beliebigkeit – anything goes. Wenn Gott gewollt hätte, dass wir Glauben und Wissen miteinander vermischen, hätte er uns nicht vom Baum der Erkenntnis naschen lassen. So steht’s jedenfalls in der Bibel. (A.a.O.)

In between pornified culture and purity balls, in between the slut and the virgin, the stupid, lascivious dude and the knight in shining armor, in between the messages directed at young women -- your body is your power vs. your body is dangerous -- and young men -- your gaze is your power vs. your gaze is dangerous -- are real young people trying to develop authentic identities and sexual practices. Für die Studie wurden sechs Grundschulen in vier Berliner Bezirken unter Berücksichtigung verschiedener Sozialstrukturen ausgewählt: Rund 280 Kinder aus 3./4. sowie 5./6. Klassen wurden im Jahresabstand nach ihren Lieblingscomputerspielen befragt sowie wann und wie oft sie damit spielten. Zuvor sollten sie sich selbst einschätzen, wie sie mit Ärger und Frust umgehen. Das offen aggressive Verhalten wie Schubsen, Treten, Schimpfen oder latent aggressives Intrigieren, Gerüchte streuen oder Ausschließen anderer wurde zudem von den Mitschülern und Lehrern der jeweils 8- bis 13-Jährigen bewertet. Jetzt sei es wichtig, die weitere Entwicklung der Kinder in der Pubertät zu verfolgen. "Vieles deutet aber darauf hin, dass die simple Schlussfolgerung "Gewaltspiele machen gewalttätig" eindeutig zu kurz greift", sagte Kristen. Vielmehr gehe es um ein komplexes Gefüge real erlebter und virtueller Gewalt - das gesamte Lebensumfeld müsse deshalb im Blick bleiben.

POPSHandys fördern Gewalt unter Jugendlichen Die Studienreihe JIM des Medienpädagogischen Forschungsverbundes Südwest ermittelt seit 1998 das Medien- und Freizeitverhalten der Jugendlichen zwischen zwölf und 19 Jahren in Deutschland. Der Verbund ist ein Projekt der Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg und der Landeszentrale für Medien und Kommunikation Rheinland-Pfalz. Die JIM-Studie wurde zusammen mit der Medienforschung des Südwestrundfunks (SWR) erstellt. "Die Ergebnisse bestärken uns, hier weiter in die Forschung zu investieren und das Handy als wichtiges Jugendschutzthema zu begreifen", sagte Thomas Langheinrich, Präsident der Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg.

POPSMusic for the Brain Some people say that art and music are an impractical luxury for schools, given the hyper competitive demands of "globalization" that require a strong background in science and math. Laying aside the wrong-headed workforce-training assumptions behind such an instrumentalist educational philosophy, another way of looking at it is: given the "new economic" reality -- where workers won't have long-term jobs or careers but multiple jobs and careers -- the advantage goes to those with nimble minds and creative intelligence; not the proficient test-takers our education factories are producing. Improving the achievement gap? Raising test scores? Preventing kids from dropping out? We need more music education, not less. The math is simple.
