POPSPelz? Nein, danke! The EU Takes a Stand for Seals Seals around the world are throwing up their flippers in celebration — the European Parliament voted today (2009-05-05) to end the sale of seal products across the European Union (EU)! This vote adds to the pressure on Canada to end the seal slaughter. It shows that the EU Parliament recognizes the inhumanity of the annual massacre. The ban will undoubtedly deal a strong blow to sealers' profits — and that, in turn, will result in less blood on the ice. The EU's decision is in line with the wishes of the majority of European citizens and all good people across the globe, including, of course, all Canadian citizens who are ashamed that their country is party to the bloody seal slaughter. Eyes now turn to the Canadian government: It has threatened to challenge the EU ban on trade in seal products at the World Trade Organization. blog.peta.org

POPSUri Avnery: Apologizing for past wrongs as a part of modern political culture I BELIEVE that peace between us and the Palestinian people - a real peace, based on real conciliation - starts with an apology. In my mind's eye I see the President of the State or the Prime Minister addressing a special extraordinary session of the Knesset and making a historic speech on the following lines: MADAM SPEAKER, Honorable Knesset, On behalf of the State of Israel and all its citizens, I address today the sons and daughters of the Palestinian people, wherever they are. We recognize the fact that we have committed against you a historic injustice, and we humbly ask your forgiveness.

POPSMoral Philosopher Questions Memory Manipulation Hurley says while the real threat of developing PTSD might be a good enough reason to use beta-blockers as a preventative measure, she also wants policy makers to consider the ramifications of what such a treatment may mean to a person’s moral well-being. “Beta-blockers do not cause amnesia. Rather they make memories less vivid, detailed and arousing,” explains Hurley, who specializes in bioethics. “They lessen the emotional impact when someone is recalling upsetting events.”

POPSAesop: DE RANA ET VULPE The frog said goodbye to her swamp and adopted a new mode of life, and quite puffed up with pride she went into the forest. Girded round with the beasts' wreaths of honor, she professed publicly the art of medicine, declaring which herbs which are useful in curing the body's diseases, shouting that she was more worthy of honor than Galen or Hippocrates. The gullible animal kingdom easily put their trust in the frog - except only for the fox, who laughed at the boasting frog. "You witless and giddy creature! Why do you babble such foolish things? Why do you assume this worthy art which you know absolutely nothing about? Sickly green and pale - look at your own lips: why don't you just go home and cure yourself, doctor! And then you might come back to us, when we may perhaps expect something more useful from you." The frog said nothing in response, but groaned with quiet sighs, and all the woods resounded with the laughter of the beasts.

POPSSeneca: Papulas observatis alienas, obsiti plurimis ulceribus There are people who are critical of some small fault in others (a pimple) while seeming to be oblivious to enormous faults of their own (innumerable ulcers). Probably the most famous example of this type of saying is the famous passage in the Gospels, as here in Matthew: Quid autem vides festucam in oculo fratris tui et trabem in oculo tuo non vides? And why seest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye; and seest not the beam that is in thy own eye? Or how sayest thou to thy brother: Let me cast the mote out of thy eye; and behold a beam is in thy own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thy own eye, and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

POPSFighting Words: How to Humiliate -- and Convert -- a Right-Winger This article, written by John Dolan, appears to me like a pathetic display of misunderstood liberal attitudes, caused by fear of being left on the shelf. In case the US-American voters don't understand sober speech but only humiliating speech, one can write the U.S.'s democracy off as a dead loss.

POPSMarch of Democracy - Government by the People across History - 4,000 years in 90 seconds [FLASH] This is simplification as usual: "The Republic of Rome - First Democratic World Power"; Manifest Destiny as an expansion of democracy. Which people ruled? Which peoples were oppressed by that people? Can anybody glorify a political system as democratic when peoples are oppressed by it? Can a world power be democratic at all? What, for instance, about the "democratic" attitude of the United Kingdom when the queen/king was Empress/Emperor of India? Which is the value of democracy if the demos fancies themselves the chosen people to subjugate and to prey other peoples? Conclusion: Democracy is not enough. There must be cosmopolitan morality to make it a valuable political system.

POPSPablo Ouziel: Failed fascist states Initiatives such as the “Alliance of civilizations” idealistic and irrelevant slogans to be fed to those minorities actively engaged in civil disobedience against the harmful policies being implemented for the promotion of globalization. This situation leaves us with just waiting time before fascist tendencies become even more apparent and a substantial part of this ‘global community’ decides to react against the oppressive forces. Either that, or like the Nazi’s, we keep pushing our ‘liberating ideals’ until the axis of power shifts and we are defeated. Either way, this period of history to which we all belong will undoubtedly remain recorded somewhere as the rise and fall of the American Empire. Like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, hundreds of years from now, anthropologists, historians, sociologists and tourists will wonder at how the thirst for dominance blinded such powerful and developed societies into their inevitable collapse.

POPSAbid Mustafa: "The West to the World: Accept Our Values or Die"
The West armed with its secular doctrine and materialistic world-view proceeded to exploit, plunder and colonize vast populations in order to control resources and maximize wealth. In pursuit of these newfound riches the West succeeded in destroying civilizations such as the Incas, American Indians, Aztecs, and Aborigines. Those who survived colonization were forcibly converted to Christianity, stripped of their heritage and sold into bondage to western companies. For the indigenous people of Africa, India, Asia, the Middle East and others, the promises of freedom quickly evaporated and were replaced by colonial rule. Resistance offered by the natives towards their colonial masters was met by brute force . When the West was not destroying the natives they were too busy annihilating each other in a desperate bid to cling on to their precious colonies. World Wars I and II are prime examples of the destructive nature of western values.

POPSThe scourge of global neoliberalism and the need to reclaim democracy With power loosened from traditional modes of politics, public policy has been hijacked by global corporate elites and the state has been forced to abandon its comprehensive social welfare agenda in order to cater to the needs of the plutocrats. Wedded to the belief that the market should be the organizing principle for all political, social, and economic decisions, neoliberalism wages an incessant attack on democracy, public institutions, and non-commodified values. Privatization, deregulation, commercialization, and cuts in social spending rule the day and the prevailing mentality is that everything is for sale and what is not has no value as a public good or practice.
