POPSThe Women's Crusade In the 19th century, the paramount moral challenge was slavery. In the 20th century, it was totalitarianism. In this century, it is the brutality inflicted on so many women and girls around the globe: sex trafficking, acid attacks, bride burnings and mass rape. Yet if the injustices that women in poor countries suffer are of paramount importance, in an economic and geopolitical sense the opportunity they represent is even greater. “Women hold up half the sky,” in the words of a Chinese saying, yet that’s mostly an aspiration: in a large slice of the world, girls are uneducated and women marginalized, and it’s not an accident that those same countries are disproportionately mired in poverty and riven by fundamentalism and chaos. There’s a growing recognition among everyone from the World Bank to the U.S. military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff to aid organizations like CARE that focusing on women and girls is the most effective way to fight global poverty and extremism.

POPSWhy Jimmy Carter left the Southern Baptist Convention Subservience of women to men is a false argument, dependent upon selection of certain verses of the Bible and the exclusion of many others. Suppressing female leadership is a cultural decision of male leaders, not an accurate reading of Scripture.

POPSYemen: 8-year-old girl forced to marry, demands divorce Nujood’s case is considered the first of its kind where a minor prosecutes her father for marrying her off at a young age and subjecting her to harm . Early marriage is “one of the biggest development challenges in Yemen,” said Naseem Ur Rehman, chief information officer for UNICEF in Sana’a . A 2006 field study revealed that child marriage among Yemeni girls reached 52.1%, compared to 6.7% among males. The study, conducted by the Woman and Development Study Center, affiliated to Sana’a University, disclosed that marriage age raised gradually from an average of 10.24 years to 14.70 years for women and from 20.97 to 21.54 years for men. It indicated that the average marriage age varies from one geographical area to another; for example, it showed that girls in Hodeidah and Hadramout married at the average age of eight, while in Mukalla the average age was 10. POPSAfghanistan: Women's lives worse than ever International Women's Day is March 8 this year, and it is an occasion which the president will certainly use, once again, to claim success on behalf of the women in Afghanistan and Iraq. POPSHijab is a personal choice not state law in Turkey In the early eighties, Iran imposed the hijab on its female citizens, while Syria banned it from schools during the same period. Syria gradually came to terms with the hijab, as the number of Syrian women who chose to wear it increased drastically during the nineties. The hijab is enforced today in Iran and Saudi Arabia, and banned in Tunisia . France banned the hijab in 2004, and far right politicians and pundits are calling for similar bans in other European countries . The Turkish parliament passed a constitutional amendment that practically repealed early constitutional provisions that allowed the Turkish government to ban the hijab from government buildings, universities, and schools. Although the lifting of the ban is not in force yet, the confrontation over this issue with secularists who control the military and the courts has already started. Secularist Turks are up in arms, protesting the new amendment .

POPSSaudi woman to be beheaded for being a "witch" Being beheaded by sword in a public place... For being a "witch" or practising "witchcraft"... Welcome back to the Middle Ages: "Burn the witch!" or "Behead the witch!", by the name of God. Correct me if I'm wrong, Saudi Arabia is a close ally of the US, who enthusiastically invaded Iraq to bring "human rights and democracy" to Arabs, right?

POPS'Tragic protest' of Iraqi Kurdish women "When Saddam's regime was in power he did everything to subordinate women" "The Anfal Campaign against the Kurds was exactly like that. He actually killed all the men but let the women stay and live that sort of misery with their children. There was 30 years of that kind of rule. It will take a long, long time for that to change. It is a very slow and painful process." The human rights minister in the Kurdistan region admits that immolation is a problem that his government is struggling to deal with There have been attempts to improve education and women's shelters have been built, but it will take years to change long-held customs.

POPSThe Strange Journey of Ayaan Hirsi Ali: From Devout Muslim to Outspoken "Feminist" Critic of Islam
The former "liberal" who becomes an outspoken right-winger has become an American political archetype. Ronald Reagan and David Horowiz are two prime examples of the breed. They use the rhetorical tool of claiming to be just as caring and compassionate as their previous political incarnation, but the left's irrationality and hatred of (you pick it) the West, America, Christianity, capitalism, etc. caused them to wake up one morning and see the light. And having transformed from lefty caterpillar into a right-leaning butterfly, they present themselves as qualified to comment on liberalism's moral and intellectual failures. related version of this turncoat persona : a "reformed" Muslim woman who favors crushing Islam under the boot of Western militarism. Once very devout in her Muslim beliefs, Ali has transformed into an outspoken critic who bases her calls for the destruction of Islam on feminist and human rights principles.

POPSCuria Generalis Ordinis Praedicatorum proposita Neerlandica respuit

POPSDomestic Abuse Up Close: Man Beats Wife, Forces Their Son to Film It (VIDEO) This is a video a man made his 13 years old son take of him insulting and beating his wife. It shows how justified abusers feel about their behavior. Watch to the end to see what the sentencing judge makes of it... And read the bloody blasted damned comments some cretins have not been ashamed to write on YouTube. When I was watching it the first time, I frantically cried Merde !

POPSFemale Airman Makes Rape Accusation, Ends Up On Trial Herself It is that outcome that has so alarmed advocates for rape victims and raised a concern that -- regardless of whether Hernandez is correct in her accusations --the case will have a chilling effect in the future. According to the Los Angeles Times, Hernandez' attorneys have released a statement saying that "'important, relevant evidence' was denied them during discovery and that Hernandez decided not to plead to the same indecent-act charge as the three airmen because 'she was told that she was considered guilty unless she proved herself innocent.'" POPSJordanian Given Six-Month Term For Killing Sister Comment, submitted by Ellen R. Sheeley , 2007-07-18 Articles 97, 98, and 340 of the Jordanian penal code offer leniency to the perpetrators for "honor" killings. Typical sentences for them run from three to 24 months, but average only six months . My findings revealed overwhelming support among the Jordanian people for stiffening the sentences for "honor" killings. Granted, Jordan is not a democracy, but one still cannot help but wonder why its ruling monarch cannot find a way, perhaps using a royal decree, perhaps working through the tribal system within Jordan, to end or at least to punish this dreadful practice, particularly when there is such strong support among his subjects for doing so. One gets the impression that, for all the words and the hand wringing, there just isn't the political will. I, for one, cannot understand why a woman's life continues to have so little value in this world.
