Michael Kimmel: Why I am a feminist
    Lexica
    by Lexica  10-20-2009
More: The biggest mistake we make is to assume - and men often think this - that gender equality is a zero-sum game. That if women win, then men are going to lose. And I think what we have to do is to show people that feminism is a win-win. I think we can do that at the personal level in terms of the quality of our relationships with our children, our partners and our friends, and also in terms of public policy.

PETA's dirty secrets: 7 things you didn't know about PETA

More: regularly target children as young as six years old with anti-meat and anti-milk propaganda, often waiting outside their schools to intercept them as they walk to and from class-without notifying parents.… PETA…fund the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a deceptive animal rights group that promotes itself as an unbiased source of medical and nutritional information… PETA…billboards taunt Christians with the message that hogs "died for their sins."…And its infamous "Holocaust on Your Plate" campaign crassly compares the Jewish victims of Nazi genocide with farm animals. PETA has repeatedly attacked research foundations like the March of Dimes, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, because they support animal-based research that might uncover cures for birth defects and life-threatening diseases…president Ingrid Newkirk has said that "even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we would be against it."

I will never rent from Horizon Group Management in Chicago

    by Lexica  7-28-2009
An apartment management company is suing a former tenant for saying on Twitter that the apartment had mold. "We're a sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization" said the management company's spokesperson. I'm sure prospective tenants would be glad to know that, so I'm all in favor of spreading this story widely. BTW, the former tenant in question had 20 Twitter followers when she tweeted; if the management company had not sued, 20 people would know about it. Now? Well, how many people read the Chicago Sun-Times ? Hah.

Score one for the little guy: Chevron loses court ruling
    Lexica
    by Lexica  7-7-2009
More: For the people of Richmond, the Chevron plant has been both a provider of economic stimulus and a bringer of pain over the years. While the refinery is undoubtedly the city's largest employer, tax contributor and corporate resident, the risk to the respiratory health and safety of citizens is as ever-present as the waterfront refinery. In neighborhoods near the plant, children suffer from disproportionately higher rates of asthma. One advocacy group reported that asthma rates in the industrial belt of Contra Costa and Solano counties are among the highest in the state. Add that physical discomfort to the prospect of sirens warning of a chemical leak, like the one that kept people shuttered behind their doors in August 2003, and it's pretty clear that locals have good reason to be concerned - and suspicious.

More: "Teaching employees that dissent on issues of public concern is something to be feared, rather than encouraged, is a dangerously counterproductive use of scarce security resources, making us less safe as a democracy," Northern California ACLU staff attorney Ann Brick and ACLU Washington national security policy counsel Michael German wrote in the letter to Gail McGinn, acting undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness. "DOD employees cannot accomplish their mission of protecting our nation and its values unless they understand that those values encompass the right to criticize our government through protest activities," they wrote. "It is imperative that they are taught the difference between political, religious or social activism and terrorism."

Young Pakistanis: "You want to do something? Pick up a shovel."
    Lexica
    by Lexica  5-22-2009    2
the most serious discussion of the day, one that is arguably Pakistan’s biggest problem: the gap between rich and poor. Generations of poverty and a system of substandard education that keeps people in it have created fertile ground for Islamic militancy, which now poses a serious threat to the stability of the country. “Here, if you’re poor, you’re not even a human being,” said Pavel Qaiser. “It’s the culture we have — one landlord and the peasants working under him.” And here was a revelation: the trash picking, which the students had intended as an example for shopkeepers and residents, was actually an exercise for themselves. “The rich don’t care, the poor can’t do anything, so it’s up to the middle class to make the change,” Mr. Khwaja said, as a group of friends standing near him nodded in agreement. “We have to lead by example. To change it from inside.”

This is not a riot: an effective, nonviolent response to attacks by riot police

    by Lexica  4-7-2009    6
More: More broadly, standing one’s ground under the force of police batons was pioneered during the Dharasana Satyagraha, a non-violent raid of the Dharasana Salt Works at the conclusion of the Salt March. On May 21, 1930, a march led by two Indian women,Sarojini Naidu and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, was attacked by police. The marchers continued to walk forward even as those at the front of the line were beaten to a bloody pulp. 320 were injured. The news stories of this action were critical in bringing world wide attention to the Indian independence movement. More info on the Dharasana Salt March .

    12 Myths about Hunger
    Lexica
    by Lexica  3-5-2009    2
More: Reality: There is no theoretical or practical reason why freedom, taken to mean civil liberties, should be incompatible with ending hunger. Surveying the globe, we see no correlation between hunger and civil liberties. However, one narrow definition of freedom - the right to unlimited accumulation of wealth-producing property and the right to use that property however one sees fit - is in fundamental conflict with ending hunger. By contrast, a definition of freedom more consistent with our nation's dominant founding vision holds that economic security for all is the guarantor of our liberty. Such an understanding of freedom is essential to ending hunger.

The Media's Role In The Financial Crisis
    Lexica
    by Lexica  1-24-2009
More: So in Florida, Arizona and California, among other epicenters of the housing bubble, newspapers might have told their readers -- including governmental officials -- the difficult truth. They could have explained, again and again, that the housing bubble would inevitably lead, at least locally, to personal financial disaster for many in their regions, not to mention fiscal woes for local and state governments. How many should have done this, given the media's at least partial reliance on advertising from those who profited from the bubbles? Any that cared to do their jobs…the threat to New Orleans from hurricane-created flooding was clear long before Katrina, and the New Orleans Times-Picayune did run a series of articles warning of what might happen years before the hurricane struck. What it didn't do was follow up in the relentless kind of way that might have spurred local, state and federal action to prevent or mitigate the inevitable disaster.

Imagine living in a community of 11,000 people (3,000 of them children) crammed into an area of 4 square kilometers. Imagine five people dying every day from preventable causes. Imagine being 30 years old and not once in your life having had a drink of clean, safe water. Imagine knowing that the water you give your children is sickening and killing them, but there is no alternative. Imagine 80% unemployment. Imagine no medical care. Imagine your home collapsing around you during the rainy season. Imagine children playing in open sewers. For the people of Kantolomba, Zambia, this is reality. Now imagine children attending school every day and being given healthy food and clean water. Imagine clean water for the entire community. Imagine a medical clinic. Imagine roofs on the houses so they don't fall down. Imagine job training and support for micro-businesses. This is becoming reality. You can help.

More: Our projects all have a beginning and an end in sight when we undertake them. We do not take on projects that require sustenance, or in other ways discourage client independence. Thus, assistance is given in many ways to ensure that initiated projects are locally viable and sustainable… The Starfish Bakery & Café was started in 2001 as an income generating project for the Starfish Project. The Starfish Center provides employment opportunities for Cambodian people with disabilities as all outreach workers, bakery/café, internet and massage employees suffer from some form of physical disability which makes it difficult for them to obtain meaningful employment elsewhere… Due to the fact that the Starfish Bakery & Cafe funds all of the necessary overhead and administrative costs, we are able to put all donations and money raised directly towards helping our clients.

The guy in the photo is Batso, one of the Rescue Ink members. At 74 years old he's still an imposing figure, sporting body art from some of the most highly regarded tattoo artists in the world. Batso is a dedicated martial artist and weight lifter, who holds a Connecticut state record in power lifting. Growing up, Batso cared for sheep, goats, as well as poultry, and began developing a lifelong love and respect for animals. Animal abuse is something that Batso cannot, and will not tolerate. Among his close friends Batso counts Inky, a rescued pit bull that had been abandoned, and his iguana George. I love the photo. As one commenter said, "The guy and the kitten have the same expression on their faces!"

What I got for Christmas: a solar cooker for someone in Africa!
    Lexica
    by Lexica  12-27-2008    6
For Christmas this year, my dad gave a donation in our honor to Solar Cookers International, a non-profit organization working to help promote solar cookers and teach people how to use them. Wow. These people are doing good work. You start clicking around the website and it's amazing how many ways solar cookers can make a difference for people: "reduced spending on fuels; decreased exposure to smoke, ash, and flames; and less time and energy spent collecting fuel to name a few." This bit from one of their newsletters made me cry: Fifty women with leprosy were trained in early 2007. With the loss of nerve sensation caused by the disease, traditional open fire cooking can be dangerous for these women because they can unknowingly get burned. Another benefit is that the women have increased status in the community because they now know something that most don’t: how to cook food with the sun.

More: “For me it always comes back to the One Body,” Bernie says. “We think of the One Body as One, but it’s also a million different things, each of which is the One Body. It’s important to realize Oneness. It’s also important to honor each individual part of the One Body as the One Body. When we say that we’re global, when we say that we’re all One, do we also recognize the differences?…Some people don’t see the One Body and just honor one part, the part they’re comfortable with. Other people want to honor the One Body at the expense of its parts. The challenge is to honor each part as the One Body and not to exclude anything.” …clowning is not just a profession, it’s a practice. He’ll tell you that discovering one’s own clown world causes a shift in perspective. You may be a business person, a housewife, a teacher or a farmer, but when you enter your clown world you see things differently. And when you clown with other people, you help them see things differently.

Attention activists: Permission to feel good
    Lexica
    by Lexica  11-6-2008
More: And so those who would feel accomplishment and revel in their moment of triumph censor themselves. They become defensive. They seek to preempt. How many people included the phrase (or an equivalent) "I know how much more we have to do, but I'm so happy now!" As if rejoicing now is somehow inappropriate, that we must seek pardon and permission to celebrate any milestone. And it works. The joy is diminished. The reward less. The labor made greater. And, over time, we lose our capacity for joy and become worldly and cynical and join the chorus to silence those who can still dare to take undiluted and unmitigated pleasure in their achievements.
