Music IS the Universal Language
Meredithk1981
by Meredithk1981  2-26-2008
The rap artist RZA once said "Music is the key that's gonna keep us together under one banner." This is a prime example. Once we all start realizing the commonalities we all share, such as love and appreciation for a musical concert, rather than our differences, we will be one step closer to a better world.

Give a Face to Your Charities

As clearly denoted by the red cups at Starbucks & the festive songs in the malls, the holiday season is upon us. It's a time of giving (who doesn't think of the Red Cross Santas with their metal buckets and bells at the supermarket?), and as I prepare our company's holiday card - with proceeds to charity - I stumbled across this article. For all the attention social networking gets for being a playground for pedophiles, and the stigma that teenagers are uncaring slackers, I thought this was a pretty positive article in the Times. And it's also inspiring! For all those of you involved in non-profits, this may be something to bring up in your next board meeting as well. Telethon what?

You wouldn't think of some of these, but it's an interesting list overall . . how does YOUR job rank?

"I'll Never Let Go, Jack"
Meredithk1981

Kind of like watching a sinking ship slowly go down, the last few survivors of one the greatest tragedies of our time slowly fade into the past. I had to clip this one, though, since I've been on a privacy vs public life kick (it's not just me - if you read the Op Ed in Boston's Metro on 11/7 you'd see the same thing!). This article brings up another interesting point about how we approach the public sphere has drastically and swiftly changed. We are all so eager to post blogs and comments on what we ate for breakfast, or what we're listening to, or what we thought of the latest film; and yet, this woman was from a time so removed from that that she didn't even want the ending of her life to be mentioned in public.

Back to the Repetitive Grind of the Office
Meredithk1981
by Meredithk1981  11-8-2007
I know the strike is all over the news and the general public's feelings about the situation seem to be equally split on each side, with a heavy leaning towards "don't really care," but I had to share this because I love this show and it breaks my heart. However, the fact that the staff is reaching out through the online world such as MySpace makes me hopeful. Perhaps, in a cruel ironic twist, the writers will fight back and create their OWN original material online?! I was just getting over the switch from one hour to half hour episodes of the Office, but they were at least fresh and new. Oh well, back to the DVR!

Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn

Wow - same logo since 1952?! I'm very curious to see what the new logo will be. Another interest - will they change their advertising campaign as well? They've always been very middle-ground, wholesome, family oriented. Intercontinental generally lends itself to a hipper market. Will Holiday Inn now do the same - hip, affordable hotels for Generation Y? Stay tuned!

Peekaboo, I See You (and don't know if I want to!)

An interesting idea - for those of us who love updating our profiles/status reports, and posting detailed, often banal or mundane photos of our everyday, how many of us would be willing to actually live in a glass apartment? It's the same concept . . . it just emphasizes how much the online world lowers the barriers that we normally hold in our day to day interpersonal lives.

Would you just shut up already?!

It brings up an interesting point that makes me wonder if we've escaped the "Me Decade" of the 80s - that both the loud talkers and the jammers think they are in the right. (Similar to the crosswalk rule in Boston - you hate having to stop for pedestrians as a driver, but you hate when cars don't stop as a walker.) As handy gadgets frequently bring our personal lives into the public sphere, it's interesting to see the interpersonal disconnect and selfishness that springs up with it.

Brandweek Makes the Typical Announcement
Meredithk1981
by Meredithk1981  11-2-2007
I am not anti-shopping, anti-retail, or anti-holiday spirit, by any means. But sometimes certain articles are just too much. Such as this one, which marks that time of year when the retail industry says people will be spending less than before around the holidays. Here's why this piece makes me angry/laugh: -Every year there are tons of articles about how retail spending will be down. Evil, ironic twist to boost more sales? -The sexist undertones of women purchasing more than any other group. And the stereotype of grandparents that spoil their grandkids. -I absolutely *love* the comment how gift cards will be the top purchase. And then how 49% of the population still haven't used the ones they got this year. Too funny!
