About me
Hey, I'm just a normal guy - a jack of all trades type of guy. There is so much in this world that makes me just shake me head. I think people delude themselves quite a bit - buy into hysteria and live in fear. As a nation we've been indoctrinated since birth into believing things that simply are not true.

I hope to point out some inconsistencies in common misconceptions. In the very least, get people to at least THINK about what it is they believe rather than just accept it because its always what they've been told.

<edit> Well, that used to be me above. After dealing with a crapload of idiots, morons, ideological pinpricks, and a slew zealots I've concluded that there is no getting through to people who just choose to believe what they want to believe regardless of how much evidence and proof there is to show them the contrary. These cretins think they are clever when they mirror their own faults onto those that contradict them, or failing that, seek to redefine terminology and distinction because they recognize that their beliefs are either wrong or batshit crazy.
Why I use Clipmarks
I like clipmarks because it brings a very large variety of interesting topics up which I can browse through. If the clip interests me then I can read the source for more info.

The only drawback to Clipmarks is that it fosters divisive groups on various topics and intellectual cowards quickly ban anyone with an opposing opinion to their clips. This basically leaves many "preaching to the choir".

"The God I believed in was supposed to be perfect. Too perfect, in fact, for mortal minds to fathom. Ultimate love. True goodness. Omniscient. Omnipotent. Omnipresent. The whole nine yards and then some. Whenever something about God didn’t make sense to me, I countered myself by saying my definition of God must simply be too narrow. But because of that, God soon became just an infinitely broad but paper-thin abstraction. It was then a very small step to the realization that the concept of a personal God was absurd. Eventually, I came to understand the fallacy of the “God of the Gaps“."

Why I am a Christian - Taylor

by Oortcloud  12-1-2011    1
Of course Christians want to get in on the act so PZ has been flooded with a bunch of "Why I am a Christian" testimonials. Most, he says, are illiterate and incoherent and just get ignored, but this one had at least a semblance of understanding. But it is still fatally flawed on both points it stands on. The first point rests on the fatally flawed "Cause" argument. "We are here so something caused us to be here". Of course people using this argument just assumes it was their god that did it. The problem is that even if one were to accept a higher intelligence as a cause, why does it have to be YOUR god as the cause? There are so many creation stories that attribute creation by their god and just like Christianity their only proof is an insistence that they are right. Another problem with this is that if you claim a cause to creation, then what is the cause of the cause? In other words, who or what created god?

Common Fundy Fallacies
Oortcloud
by Oortcloud  11-29-2011
An alphabetical categorization of common theistic fallacy techniques I've often faced when discussing something with a religious person. A through Z with specific examples in each alphabetical category and explanations of each. Just reading through to 'J' has given me a good laugh at recognizing so many fallacies that have been sent my way. Well worth reading and you can't help but reflect on "discussions" you've had with theists and see their exact tactics listed.

We definitely have a common pattern with many that become atheist - something compels them to research and investigate a religious belief, claim or teaching and the results of actually looking into these things turn out to repudiate them. Knowledge truly is the bane of religion.

God mongers love people with problems. They get to tell them how god will help them and if the person succeeds then god gets a big plus sign. If the person fails then they get to tell them they didn't try hard enough. The thing that is enlightening is that the ratio of people who recover from their problems is the same regardless if they "turned their life over to god" or if they just solved them themselves. It's almost as if they didn't need god at all and just attributed their success to god as a means of validation ...

Religious Descrimination
Oortcloud
by Oortcloud  11-23-2011
A religious group put up a billboard that said "There is no God. Don't believe everything you hear" and had their own website address below the message. An atheist group tried to put that exact same message up, only with THEIR website address below the message and it was deemed "obscene" and "unnecessarily offensive" and the billboard company refused to place it. This is a blatant double standard. It's OK to put up offensive religious messages like calling people the anti-christ or haranguing people with threats of damnation, but if you try and let people know they aren't alone in thinking all the god babble isn't true then you are considered being obscene. What is obscene is how people worship in a zombie cult and practice ritualistic cannibalism. What is offensive is a religion that glorifies stories of carnage and global extermination of all life.

I've often been accused of "being angry with god" by fatheists, but that accusation could hardly be further from the truth. My anger stems from dishonesty, delusion and ignorance that is foisted onto people by religious supporters. Since god is not real, its irrational to claim you are angry with an imaginary being. No more rational than being angry, with say, Homer Simpson, for something you may have seen in one if the Simpson's episodes. The anger would actually be focused at the producers of the show. So yes, I am angry at the way religious establishments lie to people, encourage ignorance and dishonesty and facilitate the continued existence of a delusion. But angry at god? There's nothing there to be angry with.

Why I am an atheist - Another Anonymous

This person discusses a few aspects of what they found wrong with religion and examined various Christian religious beliefs. The conclusion mirrors that of which I've been trying to point out to Darkforce - that each specific belief bases their conclusions on subjective ideals of god. None of them have any evidence to give them any more validity over any other belief system. The author concludes that there is no real reason to accept any religious claims and that simple rational investigation often provide far better explanations than "god did it" faith excuses. If at some point some new (or any!) evidence of god is presented then the question of his existence can be revisited, but until such a time under the current evidence the claim of god fails. There is no valid reason to accept these claims as legitimate, accurate or even realistic. The claimed god does not exist.

Some will argue that prayer isn't a gumball machine, that its a discussion with god. But it still amounts to the same thing. Thinking in your head and attributing it to talking to an imaginary being.

Personhood does not start at conception

The religious right has a loud voice and quite often it fools even themselves into thinking they have the majority of support in their wacky claims. It's pretty bad tho when even the most conservative state in the nation takes what they are claiming says "I don't think so" The entire abortion issue isn't about saving children's lives. It's no more saving a child's life than claiming you saved children by putting out a fire in a gradeschool. On Sunday. During spring break. When the school was empty. It's about instigating control over people, specifically women, and forcing them to live by morality standards founded on false premises.
