    The Mathematical Lives of Plants
    Kore7
    by Kore7  5-6-2007    6
The seeds of a sunflower, the spines of a cactus, and the bracts of a pine cone all grow in whirling spiral patterns. Remarkable for their complexity and beauty, they also show consistent mathematical patterns that scientists have been striving to understand. ... Scientists have puzzled over this pattern of plant growth for hundreds of years. Why would plants prefer the golden angle to any other? And how can plants possibly "know" anything about Fibonacci numbers? For the first time, scientists have found convincing biochemical mechanisms responsible for the interlocking spiral growth patterns seen in many plants. (The Romanesco broccoli plant is a striking example.) The video of the experiment with magnetized liquid iron droplets demonstrates how the geometry of such growth could occur in nature.

They write their findings could have implications for understanding the behaviour of psychopaths. They mention the activity regarding subjects that are presented with the possibility of punishment for their actions. Should guilt be another focus of this study? Guilt is related to both the action, and the fear of punishment. There is the idea that a psychopath has a conscience that is dysfunctional, but if this research leads to means if inducing subjects to condemn themselves, for failing to comply with arbitrary regulation, what can this research contribute to the development of crowd control, and social engineering aspirations? I know this seems alarmist, but they are trying to gather what they can from the location of a thought. When we have trouble explaining consciousness. While the conscious mind may be the tip of the ice berg, we have no idea how much ice there is.

Get Out of Your Own Way
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  6-28-2008    5
Conscious thought may well be largely overrated according to some of these studies. Alternatively, however, perhaps we do not fully understand the function of consciousness. For example, perhaps it is important in reflective thought which is not time bound and goal oriented. Some of our most profound thought processes of self description and self definition, might be of such kind. At any case, in matters of clear cut decision making and choice, consciousness seems to be more of a disturbing factor than anything else.

    ClipCast tip: keyboard shortcuts

A lot of people have posted comments and sent us emails about having a difficult time using your mouse inside the clipcast. Just wanted to post a clip letting you all know that you can use keyboard shortcuts to easily perform just about any function inside a clipcast. No joke, after i got used to the keyboard shortcuts it made the clipcast experience 100x more enjoyable for me. I recommend trying them out. FYI...there is a little icon at the top right of the clipcast that shows the shortcuts.

    ouyangwulong
    by ouyangwulong  12-8-2007    16
Now that I have your attention, allow me to introduce the Gomboc! It's an object of absolutely perfect geometric equilbrium. There is only one position in which it can rest, and it will always return to the exact same posture, because the balance of its proportions all pull it to a single incredibly narrow center of gravity. And, it is TOTALLY NAKED! I mean, just check out the curves on this one! How did we get this Gombloc? Well, there were a few Russian mathematicians sitting around (probably stoned) who thought it would be cool. So they just sat down and did the math "for a few years" and then tested thousands of pebles (once again, STONED!) until they just decided to make one themselves. I am so not worthy!
