POPSExercise Not Proved to Help Dementia Both of the remaining studies were small and only included Alzheimer disease patients. One looked at 11 patients; the other examined 134 but many of those didn't complete the exercise regimens. However, the researchers in the latter study found that those who did exercise seemed to do better at handling the tasks of daily living.

POPSIvan Illich - Deschooling Society Most of what passes for education is merely training Albeit sophisticated training that for the most part serves the interests of those who profit from the status quo

POPSFund Health Care, Not War # "Until we remove the motive of profit from the financing of health care, we cannot and we will not resolve our current health care crisis." # "Any group that proposes reform policy that maintains the use of for-profit insurance companies in a so-called free market is being driven by one single motive -- to protect the golden coffers of their share of the $2 trillion cash cow!"

POPSOh My Achy Unhappiness Stress hormones associated with inflammation (and a host of chronic illnesses) are more rampant in "unhappy" people.

POPSMedicaid in Indiana is Not Pro-Life On the way to work today, there is this pro-life sign that says every baby is a blessing. I think of the Baby Stalin, the Baby Ted Bundy, the Baby BTK Killer. But, anyway, we let breathing Americans languish without health care, and that causes death as well.

POPSDoctors without borders Also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres they take health care where it is needed, anywhere in the world. Politics is not an issue. They provide medical care, and health services to people who are victims of war, starvation and disease, who otherwise would have had no hope.

POPSSimple reason helps males evolve more quickly “There’s a health aspect in figuring out differences in gene expression between the sexes,” said Wayne. “To make a male or a female, even in a fly, it’s all about turning things on -- either in different places or different amounts or at different times -- because we all basically have the same starting set of genes.”

POPSWake The Hell Up America! Enough Is Enough The broad ideological battle over the role of markets remains a basic dividing line and dominant theme in American health policy. The premise of what has often been called “managed care” is that in too many cases the wrong services are provided and that the right set of incentives or form of organization would lead to the right services provided to the right people at the right time. The theory of managed competition thus promised that a more market-oriented approach would increase value for money spent, by leading to better-informed or more prudent purchasing. Unfortunately, in order for any kind of “market-oriented” reform of American health care to have significantly positive effects on cost, access, and quality, it would have to include such substantial restrictions on the normal ways of doing business in U.S. markets that it would be barely recognizable as “market oriented."

POPSchildren lost the right to roam in 4 generations The article reflects our changing habits and our relationship with our environment. I agree completely about the necessity of outdoors, nature, plants, our good ol' earth. Ever been fishing? To a quiet golf course? A hike? How does it rejuvenate you? I am working on making my backyard a kind of restful, naturalist place for me to go and be refreshed.

POPSDoes Tesco have the US "in the bag" for healthy food? Tesco is bringing Fresh & Easy healthy foods to the US, counting on a demand for healthy, organic food. Not for those who buy their groceries from Wal-Mart to save money, oblivious or apathetic about the health and ethical costs of "cheap" foods. When I visit California I like to shop at Trader Joe's. Next time I'm in Los Angeles I hope to find a Fresh & Easy store, too.

POPSPistachios Are Good For Your Heart I am so glad to hear this because I absolutely LOVE pistachios. I buy the ones from Turkey AKA Antep pistachios. These are the ones I grew up on until California cornered the market. You can still get them from www.nutsonthenet.com. They are distributed by Zenobia. My local drugstore carries them also.
